Play with friends
Have a friend who was also curious. Plan is getting a small stack of set cards that we can use to build our own decks, test different colors and customize. But also not worry about having to compete with other players or give a flip about the metagame.
Never touched Magic before. Was a Pokemon player for a time and might be neat to do the DnD Magic. Just buy and build decks with that set as a one-and-done

I don't know if the changes are good or bad. Haven't read the book yet. And not attached enough to Ravenloft to really have strong feelings
But suggesting these changes are just the result of the world being malleable is rather an insulting justification akin to "a wizard did it"
Having 6 surges that each heal 1/6th of your hit points means you get go from full health to 0 twice. Or from half to full health four times
