You can't count the episode it happened in. It was shown she had PSTD at the very end of episode 2. Episode 3 - agreed. The suspension being briefly referred to in ep 4 is a concession to continuity, not about Ortegas.

She is the Vulcan captain of a (by the looks of it) mostly human ship. She read humans use size to assert dominance so she's using her hair to make herself look bigger to reinforce her position as leader. Logical.
