The expectation of a hard canon, or for people to zealously adhere to it, in a medium that is all about creativity, collaborative storytelling, and focusing on the stories of the PCs instead of the NPCs...is kind of a weird take, yeah.

Hell, I would be far less interested in Dark Sun if they didn't do this, and that's my favorite classic setting. If after decades, they decided 'yeah, we're gonna pick up the timeline after the second box set, which happened after the novels that resolved all of the setting's central conflicts'...

Why even do that? A wiki might say that there's a village with an inn between town A and town B. If the DM says there isn't, the wiki is meaningless. I want to know what, aside from guidelines for writers, people think 'setting canon' even means? Is there an expectation that a DM of a given...

Literally any and every DM can and should 'reboot' whatever they like. This changes nothing in practice. Were they going to reprint all the setting lore from all editions otherwise?

For the returning setting, my money is on Greyhawk (Saltmarsh, Mordenkainen's and Tasha's so far have touched on it) or Exandria, hopefully with a new Tal'Dorei book. I've heard that Green Ronin no longer has the rights to print it, and maybe that's because WotC is planning to? I suppose...

The chance of the First World becoming a published setting aside, the concept works for me. So far it's got a kinda Chronicles of Amber/Final Fantasy XIV vibe to it that I'm loving, and I'm looking forward to reading more about it.
