Started playing Rifts about ten years ago (future apocalyptic Earth setting w/magic, techno-garbage, and unstable magical rifts - awesome) , and that lead into the full-blown Palladium setting. DM'd a little there, but admit to a mostly PC role. Later I was introduced to Dungeons & Dragons in the 3.5 golden age, and while I've played a bit of 4th edition I still think 3.5 is superior out of sheer breadth of game material (i.e. there are a lot more books, rules, items, etc. and I feel like I've got a vice-grip on it all, hehe). I've never been one to dress up for the occasion or role-play so hard it gets weird: "I want to be a wyrmling purple dragon, only my shtick is that I'm gonna' TINKER with things! *squeal* (UGH.), but I AM all about the story. As a PC, the teamwork and camaraderie/interactions between PC's and the rest of the world can be hilarious and as satisfying as anything short of really exploring a haunted crypt or a dragon's cave; in DM'ing, I've learned it's always always ALWAYS going to go sliiightly different than what I had expected, regardless of how thoroughly I thought I had it figured. For someone to whom imagining every possible outcome of a given situation (in planning an adventure) is obsessive fun, being surprised and truly not knowing what to expect - despite the fact that as a DM you're supposed to know what's going on! - is true, unadulterated fun. : )
