I would definetly prefer PJ to direct it into a 3 - 3½ hour cinema spectacular. Otherwise it will feel strange that it's supposed to fit in with LoTR, but doesn't. Sort of like how the new Star Wars movies don't fit in with the old ones at ALL. And after that... Silmarillion :)
