Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

Again, thanks for all the insightful feedback. I appreciate the comparison/contrast between editions. I am not DMing our current campaign, however I'm working on introducing the Advantage/Disadvantage mechanic.

Solid point, Blue (which, BTW, is the name of my hawk familiar :) ). Our plan is to give the kids a foundation in the sysyem we know, see how they embrace it over the next couple of years, and be a touchstone for 5e.

Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

Ok, point taken. I get it. 5E seems like a move to give the DM/GM more control of not only the narrative, but the overall dynamic of play. Isn't that shifting the dynamic too far? I agree that that 3E gave PCs too much power. Is 5E an improper correction? As I have mentioned previously, to make...

Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

Hmmm... that's quite the different dynamic. Not bad, simply different. Proves the point others have made about 3.x players having difficulty changing to 5E. Initially I liked the 3.x exactitude of Skills and a PCs ability to succeed or fail at a given task. I don't mind the Skill dynamic...

Thanks for all the commentary. It's been a big help in seeing the differences in the game mechanics. EN World is a great touchstone.

Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

You can break up your move in 3E almost the same in 5E, no? No, not 3E specific, however the specific concept of moves and actions was introduced in 3E Conditional modifiers for Prone are the same. Are there not the same modifiers for other conditions? - Dazed, Stunned, Blinded, Paralyzed...

Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

As a player and DM in the 3E system I agree that there are too many idiosyncratic mechanics in place to resolve issues - too easy to get bogged down with constant die rolls. As was pointed out earlier, 5E gives the DM more latitude to manage the game. It puts more onus on the DM, which is cool...

Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

It has been a topic of discussion among the "elders" all week. Zero compunction among the kids - which did serve as a valuable moment to address alignment. Apparently we are party to raising a new generation of Sociopaths ;) The best part is that the kids really like it, and have come up with...

Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

Interesting.... There are still a lot of the 3E basic concepts in 5E - movement, actions, conditional modifiers, AoOs. Granted, 5E takes a lot of the bloat away. Is it the minutiae of 3E that makes 5E more difficult for us dinosaurs? ;)

Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

Yeah, 3rd edition is very heavy on the stacking of bonuses via Feat chains, Skill synergies, Magic bonuses and all sorts of other crap. We played some high level campaigns in 3E - one of which I DMed - and it became absurd, and cumbersome to run and play. It appears to me that 5E might be more...

Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

Unlikely that our group will make the shift to 5E. We're in our early 50's now, our gaming time is at a premium, and our renewed interest is primarily based on teaching our kids the game (passing the torch). We're very comfortable with 3.5 and still enjoy it, warts and all. We'll see if one of...

Yeah, that was one of things I picked up right off the bat and liked. Skill points are a giant PITA. HA! Sound advice. Thanks.

Yes, it does. Thanks, man. For whatever reason I was overthinking the mechanic. It does add an easy tool for the DM.

Thanks, iserith. Doesn't get much more straightforward than that. I was overthinking it. Re: Evolution vs. Separate Game - I get what you mean. To me the changes between 1E/2E to 3E and beyond represent more of a paradigm shift (d20 system) than the changes between 3E to the present. YMMV.

Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

After a long hiatus our group has begun playing again. We play 3.5E and never explored 4E, let alone 5E. My renewed interest in playing has prompted me to explore 5E and how the game has evolved. I get the majority of the mechanics in this newest version, however I am a bit perplexed about how...
