    Synonyms for sneaky types

As someone who loves Scrubs, why not lift some of the names wholesale? This would work particularly well if the rogue is cowardly IMHO - calling a cowardly type various women's names could work well in this context. About the only one I can think of that I wouldn't use would be newbie. I don't...

    D&D 4E Will you buy 4e?

I voted I have no idea, but I suspect that I will likely end up buying them, after taking a look at the books myself. Whether I buy the PHB or all three core books will depend upon whether or not I like what I see and what the other guys in the group want to do. It will depend on how we feel...

Requiring Players To Draw The Dungeon Map!

To jump on the tangent wagon, I'd go with 23 using 3.5 Core Rules - start with an 18 and the 5 ability point increases (arbitrarily capping levels at 20 as I can't remember the bit about Epic Ability Score progression, if any, in the DMG)

The Fleshweaver & my PCs (ideas requested)

If he has access to the ability, I think that removing a body part (could be as small as a finger or as large as an entire limb) and using lesser or greater restoration to disguise the removal of said part would be good. Perhaps he would then splice the body part with a troll in an attempt to...

    How do you handle multiclassing?

I use the multiclassing rules in the PHB. I find it helps define racial differences as for example, almost all dwarves have a level or two of fighter, regardless of which class is highest. Of course, none of the players in any of my groups have wanted to have more than 2 base classes yet, so it...

What Should the Market for Magic Look Like?

Slightly off-topic, but I imagine that given the issues that Nyeshet and others have presented regarding security that theft of magic items would probably become a capital offense, regardless of the value of the item. Not sure how effective such a punishment would be, but I suspect it would be...

    Maps - Divisions and Distances

I use 5' squares for indoor environments, whether its on a battlemat or graph paper. If I do an outdoor map for my new game that is more detailed than relative locations, I will probably draw it on plain paper and craft a hex transparency sheet to lay over it when necessary to calculate travel time.

    Campaigns in the Works

I'm planning a plot arc for the solo game I'll be running shortly that will revolve around a political rivalry between two low-level nobles in a feudal-style nation. The King of the land will be looking to expand his influence into previous unsettled lands (at least as far as he is concerned)...

    Sustenance - Tracked or Handwaved

Historically, when I have DM'd I have required tracking mundane equipment such as food and ammunition (I like detailed resource management, what can I say?). I'm going to try using the upkeep variant in the DMG in my new game as I feel it will be helpful in teaching a new player the game not to...

Which Diplomacy Rule Do You Use (if any)?

I use the rules as written in the PHB. As others here have said, I always try to be conscious of the fact that a diplomacy check cannot change someone's basic nature, or their goals/motivations (perhaps over time, but not a single check). I usually will offer some bonus for roleplaying if a PC...

    3 Years of Unearthed Arcana

In the solo game I will be running I intend to use VP/WP system in place of HP. At some point, I'd like to give the Power Components and Weapon Groups a try, but as the game will be to teach my wife how to play, I will hold off on either one of those for a while. In the past, I used Gestalt and...

    Do you DM?

I'm a player first, DM second. I enjoy my time as a player, but I inevitably want to do something different or think I can do something better, so I take over the DM's chair for a bit. Eventually I go back to playing when I need to recharge my batteries or can't put in the preptime I like to.

The Official Welcome Thread - Version 2.0

Howdy, been browsing off and on for the last week or so and decided to register. I've played pretty much all of the D&D incarnations, Spycraft, Shadowrun and GURPS. Had been played in an empire building game (D&D 3.5) that went on indefinite hiatus about 3 months ago, but I will be running a...
