D&D 5E Long Rests vs Short Rests

Heh...you haven't played PotA...there are so many places that you can have the whole area on you...My party had to high tail it out of the Water Temple when they set off the glyph(coming in from the back way) and they were fighting hordes of cultist in the Large Dining hall when the Dragon...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

I can see that they are still around...I just don't deal with them...including toxic players...It does help that I'm looked at as the male patriarch of our group and they do give me respect when I'm running. Though I'm fair game between sessions ;). Heh, the kill 'em all was very popular in...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

This is where I just don't get it from the newer generation of DM's and Players. This DM vs. Players...yes in the early days, there were toxic DM's that pretty much embodied, us against them. Most of those campaigns didn't last long as the players were either killed or left. Then we had a...

D&D General On Powerful Classes, 1e, and why the Original Gygaxian Gatekeeping Failed

You know...I don't know which came first...playing Cordite and Steel or White Box D&D...I was playing both in '77. D&D was pretty mind blowing...met my best friend from bringing the rules to school...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

One of the things I like about this thread and Enworld in general is that by and large...it's pretty nontoxic. This thread has been awesome and some interesting ideas and discussions have been made. Some of it has clarified what I like and don't like about D&D in the different editions.

D&D General On Powerful Classes, 1e, and why the Original Gygaxian Gatekeeping Failed

Yeah...that sounds about right...It seems like we would have about 50 characters rolled before you got a keeper. Players had their favorite dice that weren't loaded but definitely had a bias to roll 6's.

    D&D General On Grognardism...

You know the one thing OD&D and AD&D really got right...the fear of undead. Level Drain was something to be feared. The sight of Wights, Wraiths, Specters, and Vampires caused fighters and magic users to pee in their pants. The mechanics were horrendous, but the fear of their abilities...

D&D General On Powerful Classes, 1e, and why the Original Gygaxian Gatekeeping Failed

You know I had a couple of friends who played with Gary during the early 80's. They are mentioned as playtesters for S4(The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth) and WG4 (The Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun). I never asked them how they rolled their characters or if they played pregenerated characters for...

D&D General On Powerful Classes, 1e, and why the Original Gygaxian Gatekeeping Failed

At my table, you couldn't roll by yourself. Someone had to witness the rolls. You could retire a character if the rolls sucked (they went off to become a farmer). We used 3d6 and you could pretty much keep rolling until you got a keeper or someone would witness for you(which wasn't very long...

D&D General On Powerful Classes, 1e, and why the Original Gygaxian Gatekeeping Failed

The only people I remember playing T&T were playing Solo...Played a lot of Melee/Wizard by Metagaming bought The Fantasy Trip but never played. The major influencer of D&D outside of TSR and Judges Guild preAD&D in my area was Arduin Grimore by Dave Hargrave. I remember the levels going to...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

That's why I like 5E...its roots are definitely D&D. It cleaned up things that bothered me like AC. Not just THAC0, but the you can't hit it if you tried AC -8. Those higher AC's pretty well made fighters worthless other than as meat bags so that mages could kill it. I don't think Gary...

Yup marking your die with a crayon was a right of passage...The die 20 was so versatile. It was used as 1d10/ 1d20/1d100. If you didn't have a d8 or d12 it could substitute for them by rerolling higher rolls. You only really needed was a d20 and a handful of d6's.

    D&D General On Grognardism...

I started playing D&D in '77 (white box edition)-slowly jumped into AD&D...heh because TSR was slow in releasing the books...Monster Manual in '77, PHB in '78, went to Gen Con XII to pick up the DMG in '79. I ate everything I could of D&D in those days. Judges Guild and Dragon magazine. I...
