D&D General Mike Mearls sits down with Ben from Questing Beast

And this is not a good thing... Many a company has ruined a good thing by trying to squeeze every ounce of 'profit' from their customers that they can. Oversaturation is a thing. Killing the goose that lays the golden eggs is a thing. Just because MTG continues to do well in terms of...

Sigil, Wizards of the Coast's VTT, Officially Launches

MAPS is what they should have thrown all this effort behind. More and more SIGIL just looks like a video game with extra steps...

D&D General Mike Mearls sits down with Ben from Questing Beast

Take a look at Old Swords Reign, and Into the Unknown. Both are attempts to distill 5e to OSR levels. Personally I like the way Old Swords Reign does characters, and the procedural stuff from Into the Unknown. ACKSII does fighters rather well, probably the best of the three.

D&D General Teased Lorwyn-Shadowmoor Supplement Crosses Magic: the Gathering and D&D

They will never get the crossover audience $pending they want. Mtg and D&D are two very different games with two different player bases. Most mtg players could care less about any mtg lore. They care if they have a winning deck. You do get some crossover, but it is largely the rpg people...

D&D 5E Dungeoncraft Interview with Mike Mearls

ACKSII AC system is the easiest thing in the world to fix: Subtract 10 from the classes attack throw to get a conventional Attack bonus. Add 10 to AC to get conventional ascending armor class. But I agree that it shouldn't require this fix; it's different for no reason...

Crones, Hedge Witches, Cunning Folk, Wise Women - Help needed for an RPG game

I don’t think you need go to far afield; take a look at pundits Baptism of Fire. Same system as L&D. He goes into pagan magic that should be relatively easy to re-flavor: astrology, talismans, banishing, cures, curses, folk magic, glamour, rune magic, and spirit magic. I’d advise getting the...

D&D 5E Dungeoncraft Interview with Mike Mearls

Yes. I've always thought that if you cap HP progression around lvl 6 or so. And the 6-9 th level spells are largely yeeted along with the "skip button" spells; you can design a whole game of 20 levels around the 'sweet spot'. All under the auspices of RPGs "dying"... In my opinion; RPGs go...

Evil Drow Statblocks to Return in Forgotten Realms Rulebooks Later This Year

Who's getting excited? WotC says they will do the following: Setting books Setting Products Sounds like multiple books for different settings to me. I do not see that as a stretch. No one has made any such claims. Just pointing out what seems to be a very clear change in direction from...

Boo. They should have stuck to their guns. In backing down on the Drow, they now lack any compelling reason not to.

Evil Drow Statblocks to Return in Forgotten Realms Rulebooks Later This Year

Yet for two decades WotC went around telling everyone; multiple settings = product line no,no. But now: "It'll be ok because we're doing it..." That being said; I absolutely agree that it remains to be seen is if the choice to support more settings pays off.

Evil Drow Statblocks to Return in Forgotten Realms Rulebooks Later This Year

Of course it's not the same situation. 5e is in a very different place financially. They are not going under anytime soon... But they are signaling that they will do a number of settings with support: Setting books Setting Products Multiverse Different worlds A much different proposition that...

Evil Drow Statblocks to Return in Forgotten Realms Rulebooks Later This Year

So maybe my memory is a little hazy, but wasn't releasing a bunch of different settings that divided the fanbase one of the things WotC circa 2000 pointed to that contributed to TSR's bankruptcy?

    Jurassic Park RPG?

"Reroll" that's actually a clever little term... You don't even need to have the PCs be the characters from the films - you can just run them as regular adventures in a current campaign if the genre's are compatible. In my current Vaesen campaign I turned the 1999 Sleepy Hollow film into a...

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

Agreed, when you put it all on a table, roll low or roll high doesn't matter. On first blush maybe. But from a design point of view Roll high does have advantages. i.e. For contested rolls, you do not need to insert resistance tables, or counter intuitive blackjack mechanics. High-roll =...
