I used to paint mineratures alot when I was younger. I never found a group to play with though (mid 80s). My 12 yo son was digging through my stuff last night and found them. I explained d&d&d to him and he was pumped to try. So today we got the 5e starter set and bam! He loves it. We are using Legos for terrain. I'll have to work on that. So far it's just us but he says tomorrow he is inviting the neighborhood kids over (our first adventure is tough due to our small party). Wish I would have started this 30 years ago. Never to late to be a kid again!
