What is playing 4e like for you?

Awesome answers. This is really helping me! Just a quick clarification, I definitely don't mean boardgame in a bad. I like boardgames. I just mean does combat get so focused on the tactics and rules that the imaginary stuff and character motivations become secondary. Thanks everyone. -John

What is playing 4e like for you?

When you play a session of 4e, what is it like? In a session: -What level are you? -How long do you play for? -How many combats do you play? -How long do they take? -How many players do you play with? -How long do you roelplay for outside of combat? -Does it sometimes feel like playing a...

[Terrain, Obstacles, Interactive Objects] What works best for you?

Usually for objects that are movable, we have blank printed squares that we write the name of the object on it and place it on the map so they are easy to move around. It's also convenient because we can add status updates by writing on it.

[Terrain, Obstacles, Interactive Objects] What works best for you?

In our 4E game, we try to include environment features that really help build excitement, expand tactical options, and inspire great roleplaying. Usually this means creating interesting terrain and adding features that can either help or harm or both. In one of our games we had a slave pit...

[Mouse Guard] Luke gave us the first copy as a wedding gift!

It does a pretty good job of describing the Mouse Guard world. It includes a map, break down of the basic history, stats for the main characters, details on the territories in the world, the threats, and the seasons. It also includes information not available in the comics. Since the game has to...

    I like Roles

So far we've had good experiences with player roles. I can't say if I'm for or against. Missing a key role can cause major problems. But I am definitely for roles for NPCs and Monsters. Roles are great tools for the DM.

    I think we're done with 4E

What techniques do you guys use to speed combat up? Right now we have 5-6 players and a DM. As we level up, it seems things take longer. We have a player keep track of the initiative for the DM. Combat encounters tend to be at our level or 2 levels higher. With 15 minutes, we're averaging at...

[Mouse Guard] Luke gave us the first copy as a wedding gift!

I would definitely still say this is Burning Wheel but boiled down to the very basics and pumped full of Mouse Guard flavor. But still Burning Wheel but very streamlined. It depends on what CaptainChaos doesn't like about BW. For example, if you don't like the D6 die pool, beliefs, instincts...

[Mouse Guard] Luke gave us the first copy as a wedding gift!

Quick update. Still no word on when this comes out but apparently pre-orders for the book are up with some sort of immediate pdf download and comic bundle (not sure if the comic is pdf or an additional printed book)]IPR :: Preorders :: Mouse Guard Roleplaying Game [Print+PDF] [Preorder]. Some...

Which edition would best fit my playing style?

I would say Savage Worlds or Castles & Crusades. 4E could also do it if you streamline combat. Maybe end combats soon after creatures are bloodied. And let players interpert their powers in creative non combat ways outside of combat. The warlord could use his powers to give players bonuses to...

    I think we're done with 4E

That's a great idea! We've been playing 4E for around 16 sessions (We're almost level 6) and we've been running into many of the problems described by the original poster. I love 4E combat, powers, and especially monsters. But as we level up, combat seems to drag and drag. We play for about...

[Mouse Guard] Luke gave us the first copy as a wedding gift!

I heard rumors end of December or early January. But I'm not sure. I also don't know where they will be selling it :( I hope soon. Which parts of Burning Wheel do you feel would be a poor choice? I can look up if those parts have changed in a way that would make them better choices.

[Mouse Guard] Luke gave us the first copy as a wedding gift!

Combat is essentially a game of rock/paper/scissor in that you have 4 actions (attack, defend, feint, and maneuver) to choose from whose effectiveness depends on what your opponent chose. Much, much more simple than the Fight and Duel of Wits mechanics in Burning Wheel. And there is now 1 system...

    Buffy RPG

I found some of the damage mechanics to be a bit clunky but I like the streamlined skills and really enjoy the idea of using drama points to balance out the slayers and white hats. Although I found that it is useful to limit the number of drama points in a 1 shot compared to a longer campaign...
