My preference is for dependent combat with low (but not zero) standard deviation, and critical hits. Two things that usually go along...

100% This. I prefer the verisimilitude of active defenses in combat as they IMO better represent the "sword" in Sword & Sorcery.

Yup, those definitions make sense. Which follows why I prefer systems like GURPS & RuneQuest/BRP/Mythras etc.
