Let's Talk About Character Resources To Power Abilities

I want to give this many thumbs up both for its sentiment and because it well articulates (in a way I might not have myself been able to put my finger on it). Just about any mechanic has examples of where it was executed with great elegance and examples where it was poorly done. Similarly...

Why do so many campaigns never finish? Genuinely curious what others think

I too feel there is a difference between something I'd call an "abandoned campaign" which was stopped in the midst of a narrative vs a more episodic or "independent" adventure-based campaign where things were indefinitely paused after the end of one of those adventures. For the former...

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Especially since a particular popular sci-fi/space-opera setting has many times over had its major characters piloting super fast space fighters one moment and then expertly riding land animals in the next. And several other types of vehicles in between. :)

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

I concur here... I got my start on d% and it was my go to for years for linear resolution until I started to get that same feel, where 5% increments (d20) is enough granularity and speeds up calculations immensely. Also why I prefer bell-curve systems. Can still have outliers for excitement...

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

I like opposed rolls, and use/design with them often, especially when the PCs are facing off against equal/higher tier opponents. Adds a feel of two beings with full agency working against each other. However, I'm not keen at all using opposed rolls for all skill tests, as the dual variability...

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

-nods- I'm with you on that as well! I'm not a fan of "unique dice" at all, if for no other reason than it forces buying those dice, and then maybe you don't have enough, and then have to use a chart, and... all that. Gets messy. Plus, as I discovered writing my Aurora system, having...

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

If one prefers no metacurrency, PbtA games, FitD (which as been a large part of the discussion in this thread) games, and Legend in the Mist, as examples, all do not have metacurrency. For systems that do have a metacurrency, a quick note that they operate differently than the type of...

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

There's also Tales of Xadia, which is the only published "full" Cortex Prime RPG. Fortunately and nicely they put out a free rules primer that does a good job of introducing the whole of the system. One thing to note if learning about the system through this primer is that the prime sets...

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

My preferred core mechanics (which I used as a guidepost when I designed my own system) have these two prime features at their core: Bell curve distribution Margin of Success/Failure that can be tied into both narrative outcomes as well as mechanics (for ex: damage) Slightly less important...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

Checked: Mine is mostly OK, nothing falling out though one bit does seem to be developing a split between the pages. However, I had forgotten one big thing about my BBB: it was bound backwards. The cover is rotated 180 degrees from the pages within. :D (Amusingly, so is my 1e D&D...

Things you don’t like about DMing

The blank page. That's the part that's the biggest 'struggle' for me. For whatever reason, when I need to come up with a scenario/module carte blanche, the ideas don't flow or I get concerned "will that be good/original/interesting/complex/etc enough?" And I can spin my wheels for quite some...
