You can always have the PCs know the villian before the adventure starts. For example, "You seek Black Bart, the man who betrayed your kingdom. Rumors says that he leads a bandit gang on the Great Road." Thus, the PCs have a ready made motivation.

Some people keep saying that RPGs are a dying hobby. I'm not so sure of that, but I agree that they aren't as popular as in the 1980s. I keep thinking, though, that it might be cyclical. Maybe in the next 5 or 10 years, hairy high school kids will start a new RPG phase. mongo

One of the best campaigns I ever ran was 2nd Ed. AD&D in the late 1990s. It lasted 3 years and characters went from 1st to around 15 level when we stopped. mongo
