I thought the Truenamer was an interesting class, but not something I really enjoy. My favorite were the psychic-types. Psion and Thrallherd. And a bit of soulknife.

That isn't an edition issue. That is a player issue. I was part of many gaming groups where this was not a problem.
Was 3rd capable of this? Obviously yes. But people can do it with any source that has enough options and the ability to mix and match. People do it in 5e, too.
4th ed M&M being released soon. I really like 3rd so I kinda want to check it out. I also have an M&M3 sheet but I haven't really touched it in a long time. Actually I updated it just now.
If we're talking d20 src based games, I really liked EverQuest tabletop RPG and Mutants and Masterminds. Two wildly different takes on d20 but both very interesting.
It was everything being identical in nature only different in theme. Attack does 1d6 damage, but you get your pick of fire, ice, or slashing damage. It never added fluff or anything interesting.
