Stupid High Skill Checks and Saves

I think the real difference is more like: "Stop trying to min/max the world, and just dig into the story and the RP." I don't want the world devolving into a giant calculation. I can script that game if I wanted to. The best stories are the ones you don't know the ending of. To me, that's...

Stupid High Skill Checks and Saves

I'm just starting up a campaign, and I told my players strait up "The rules come second to the story". Basically I told them if the rules are getting in the way of the story, the rules are going to get changed. Rules lawyering and powergaming is for World of Warcraft, which I and others in our...

    Why Worldbuilding is Bad

I didn't read the whole thread, so this has got to be a restate, but I HAD to say: Tolkien must be a total idiot.

What is Depth in Worldbuilding terms? How to achieve it?

I think it's a mix of both types of preparation: before and after. Before the PCs tromp around in my homebrew, I will build a world with realistic geographic places, and on and on down to kingdom politics and how each regional group intertwines with the rest. I'll add lots of flavor material...

Where can I find an online store that has 'regular' minis?

Just found out some really cool info about OOP minis. Apparently some of the reason you can still order them online is there are some stores that actually own copies of the molds, and they mold them at the store and then ship them out to you. Pretty sweet.

Where can I find an online store that has 'regular' minis?

Wow I didn't expect this level of help! Thanks a ton! That last link even the axe looks a lot like the one in Torrent's picture from the material. Sweet.

Where can I find an online store that has 'regular' minis?

Where can I find a place to buy regular miniatures? What I mean by that is a place which has an assortment of 'Female Human Cleric' type minis, for example. A place I would go as a player looking to buy a mini for my 'Elf Fighter who uses a greatsword'. A place with a bunch of just regular...

    Weaknessess of Computer RPGs

One thing you can do in UO that you really can't do in PnP DnD is run your own shop. For a long while back in...2001? I ran my own smith shop. All I ever did was mine (dangerous due to PvP/PKs), make exceptional armor (difficult to make that exceptional plate chest piece), stock my NPC vendor...

Some newbie DM combat and miniatures questions...

A lot of these posts are really good, explaining why AoOs make combat sense, specifically to control real estate in combat. The one thing that still doesn't make sense, and probably will never (some things just can't be perfected), is how a person fighting someone else directly in front of...

Some newbie DM combat and miniatures questions...

Well since I've already spent over 100 bucks on just those four books, I guess I don't have much choice now. lol I do agree that playing will give me a better grasp on how the newer system works, and how different rules affect different aspects of the game. I already know up front that changes...

Some newbie DM combat and miniatures questions...

I haven't played DnD for some time now, and have recently purchased core and, as of last night, arcana. I've noticed that combat is woefully complicated now. I'm even rather put-off by the adaption of miniatures. What house rules have you guys adopted or seen adopted to make combat simpler...

    Let's Write a Bad Module

Encounter 36 (Encounter 35 is missing from the manual) When the PCs enter the room, read the text in the box: Upon entering the room, you see an ant carrying an amazing longsword, but the longsword is really too long for the ant to be swinging it like that, so it must be an ant of amazing...

Worried that the mistakes of the past are being repeated...

I think his assumption is good, based on common sense. 90% might be a bit of a stretch, but it's a valid argument with obvious points made in other arguments. Still, the motivation is obvious as well: more books published should equal more profit. Although diminishing returns should create a...

    Good map maker? Mapper?

Nice set of links here! Thanks guys! Also, I found this: I'm kinda looking for a 3d mapper, but I haven't really found one that really blows me away. A lot of the 3d ones don't let you draw your own. You mainly just upload data from satelite scans.
