The answer was supplied by @Stormonu. It appears in the 1E DMG, p 10.
The same thing can be done with a d6 and a d10. I have a brother who still prefers to use a d6 and a d10 in place of a d20. I guess he grew comfortable doing it back in the day.
Playing in the 80's, we would frequently use a d10 coupled with a d4 or a d6 as a substitute for a d20. If you rolled a 4-6 on the d6 or a 3-4 on the d4, you would add 10 to the result of your d10 roll. I'm pretty sure that was a thing back then. If they were rolling for damage at the same...
Given that this is the level of pettifoggery confronting rogue players who just want to be able to hide in combat in order to gain advantage, thank goodness for the new Steady Aim ability! It takes things completely out of the pettifogger DM's hands.
On the topic of being able to attack with a ranged weapon from hiding, I agree with @Mistwell 100%. It's plain as day to anyone who has listened to the Jeremy Crawford podcast on Stealth that the lead designer intended for rogues to be able to hide in combat in order to gain advantage on ranged...
One thing I absolutely love about rogues is how SAD they are. This allows me to distribute my ability scores using point buy in a way that is best matched to my personal play style. I don't know about the rest of you, but there are certain attributes I have as a player that tend to manifest...
@Mistwell Since we seem to be playing very similar characters, I am quite curious about how you spent your first ASI, and how you intend to use the next few ASIs. Care to share?
On a Side Note: Last night, my Level 4 Forest Gnome Arcane Trickster used his Slippers of Spider Climbing and Mage...
I have been playing a Forest Gnome Arcane Trickster in a bi-weekly game since Tasha's came out. We are currently 4th level and here is a summary of my experiences:
With the new Steady Aim ability, I find it much easier to gain Advantage every turn with my Light Crossbow. Out of sheer...
You can't make a blanket statement like this. Booming Blade in particular is excellent for rogues who don't get Extra Attack and who can Disengage from their targets using a bonus action. Not sure what you mean about the ability mods. Booming Blade and Green Flame Blade allow you to make a...
Combined with the Polearm Master feat and the Sentinel feat, the Relentless Avenger class feature can potentially be used to keep oneself forever out of reach of a single melee opponent:
When your opponent enters your reach, they provoke an Opportunity Attack which, if it hits, reduces your...
This new lineage system is the thing that has me most excited about Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. It opens up so many character concepts that I have wanted to play without feeling that I am gimping myself mechanically for embracing a cool roleplaying idea.
I have always wanted to play a forest gnome druid because it seemed like a perfect match thematically. In terms of the racial ability mods, however, not so much!
At this point, I have probably built upwards of a hundred 5e characters that have never seen the light of day for one reason or another. When it comes to actual play, I always seem to gravitate to Rogues and Ranger / Rogue hybrids. I find that these types of characters are best suited to my...
