Not sure what the situation is over there, but the way you describe it seems like you have free rein to walk up to the BBEG and have free access to them. A BBEG should always have a screen of minions to prevent a rush, it might not prevent you from getting to them but more bodies in front does...

Honestly, one of my group's most ignored rules was the multiclassing XP penalty. A level 1/1/1/1/1 cleric/wizard/bard/sorcerer/rogue (just an example, not anything actually viable) was nowhere near the power of any other Lvl 5 character, and having an XP penalty on top of that was ludicrous...
And the load times. Good lord, the load times! But it was worth every moment waiting in order to play them. Pop in a disk, go get a snack while the game loads up, play for hours.
