D&D 5E Shields and Somatic Components: Will you play it "as is?"

I picture it this way... when a spell has both M & S components the S component involves holding the M focus component prominently like a Vampire Hunter in movies holding out a cross/crucifix against a vampire. If a spell only contains an S component, then it is more like a Catholic Priest...

How do you remember to rp your character and not you?

When I play a character I always try to use the same techniques I encourage my players to use when I GM. First, is to refer to the character in the 3rd person rather than the 1st person. IMO, that little change opens up some great possibilities, helps the narrative flow in a more storylike...

    Gaming Group Troubles

This could have a lot to do with your players lack of communication in telling you what they 'like' or 'dislike' about your games and may be an underlying reason why noone was eager to tell you about the PF game. If your players see you as someone who gets 'emotional' easily or is quick to...

    Gaming Room Setup Help

My setup is a couch, loveseat, and recliner for the GM. Currently I use a coffee table for the battlemat, but I'm trying to find a couple of folding tables with adjustable height legs for a little more space. With this setup keeping the focus low helps when using 3D terrain like WWG or FDG...

Why is Online Gaming considered Second Class?

I've played in two online games. The first was a Shadowrun 4e game using OpenRPG that was kind of a mess and fizzled rather quickly. The second, which I am still currently playing in is a MRQ2 (Roman era) using MapTool and Skype and has been a lot of fun so far. I also purchased Fantasy...

    Roleplaying Despite Continually Horrific Rolls

Double check your D20 and make sure it has #'s 11-20 on it. Sounds silly, but I had a player who had a D20 that was just #'s 1-10 twice on it and he couldn't figure out why he couldn't ever get a decent roll. Other than that, just change dice.

    Changing Game Systems

If you want a toolbox system like GURPS, I would recommend checking out BRP (Basic Role Playing) which is a fairly simple and generic ruleset that you can customize to fit most any genre. And for a more streamlined, fantasy focused version of the BRP rules I would recommend checking out MRQ II...

    Campaign Settings you like

The Old World for WFRP is definitely my favorite published setting. Dark Fantasy meets Cthulhu. I also really like R.E. Howard's Hyboria setting because I enjoy the Swords & Sorcery genre alot. Although I haven't played DnD since the days of 2e, I used to really like the Greyhawk setting. I...

Why do you have a colossal...

I'm really not sure why my RPG collection is as big as it is. I like having lots of RPG books and various setting materials to mine for ideas, but the sheer number of books and pdfs I have its sometimes difficult to remember what I have and what I don't. I certainly have more RPG materials...

Best 3d character Avatar creator (even for video games)?

I don't know if its still available online, but before Dragon Age Origins was released Bioware released a free character builder that included some customization options for the character's appearance. After Dragon Age Origins was released you could import any character you created into the...

How big is your RPG collection?

I've probably sold or given away well over 1000+ rpg books over the years. Nowadays the bulk of my rpg collection is in pdf form and I probably have only around 100 physical books. Although if I counted pdfs my collection would quite easily be in the 1000+ range again.

    How to Handle a Chase

I love to run chase scenes, but I prefer to keep the pace fast 'n furious so I usually use a fairly abstract system. I found a simple set of rules for chases on the GURPS forums years ago and have adapted it to several other games since. I'll post the original here for those who might be...

As a player, I like a campaign that...

Whether I prep a game ahead of time or run "on-the-fly", I always try to have a definite goal for the PCs in mind. However, the path the PCs take to reach that goal and whether or not the final outcome is success or failure is not something I try to have predetermined. While I do create...

    An Interesting Comparison Between Approaches

I don't have a problem with players taking a bit of narrative license so long as there are some understood guidelines and boundaries to whatever they may add to the scene. I think more players would be willing to add some narrative input if there were some type of codified guidelines/boundaries...

    The "That's Unrealistic!" Retort Compendium

I remember reading years ago about a skydiver who's chute didn't open and he fell ~30,000 feet, bounced twice and walked away with only minor scrapes and bruises. I think it may have been in the Guinness Book of World Records, but its been so long I can't recall for sure where I read about it...
