While I can't say for certain, I doubt that question is accurate. People who dislike something are far more likely to speak up than those who like that same thing, so it seems like the majority dislike it when it's just a case of the vocal minority. I could be wrong though... :)

I don't think that's necessarily true. I think WotC is counting on sales being carried by attracting more people to the hobby through licenced products. If people can have fun playing a D&D video game or reading a D&D novel or watching a D&D movie then they may try out the RPG. More splat...

If anyone is interested in a simulation, try playing HarnMaster. If the fight doesn't kill you the infection of your wounds probably will. It is by far my favourite unplayable game I've encountered.

I think this is a large part of what DMing, or at least old school DMing, is all about, especially if you have a group that looks at a map you've drawn and always say, "Let's go there!" and point to somewhere off the map...

Well, I did ask if I was misunderstanding how the word "failure" was being used. On the other hand, D&D was the #1 RPG for, well, forever, until Pathfinder began outselling 4e. One could argue that in that respect, 4e was a failure. The thing is I like 4e, but it didn't really work out too...

Wouldn't Pathfinder outselling D&D 4e be a pretty strong indication that 4e was a failure? Or do I not understand how the word "failure" is being used?

I understand the overt/covert distinction that is being presented, unfortunately it is illusory. Changing a monster's hit points, fudging a die roll, adding more monsters to fight, having some run away, they are all the same thing, but that sameness is being lost in the all too common practice...
