Without reservation, I recommend 5e to your group. I've not played 4e but have experience with 2e and 3.x. 5e offers fast, fluid, fun-gameplay with enough out of the box options to keep players coming back for more. It's also easy to run. After playing 5e, I'd not go back to a past edition...
I played in our regular Adventurers' League Encounters game with two other PC's for a brief time. Paladin, Druid and Bard worked quite well as a micro-party. We added a Sorcerer and never looked back.
I think 5e encourages blurring of traditional party roles with the broad range of sub-classes.
I was able to buy both the PHB and MM from two different local game stores. Having lost all the bookstores in my city, I'm really keen on supporting my FLGS as much as I can.
Playing Encounters at my FLGS every Wednesday now for the last 3 weeks and an impromptu con-game running through the Lost Mines of Phandelver. Lots of fun, love the system so far.
I'm thinking about running a 5e Greyhawk campaign in the future and a Tomb of Horrors one-off in either 1e or 5e.
