My queer teen daughter had/has(?) an intense love of the world of that school of wizardry. She is still really struggling to reconcile That Woman’s acts with the stories my daughter so dearly loves. There’s no easy answer for her. But it is very easy for me to walk away from Goodman Games.

We bounced off that 9d6, 8d6, 7d6… system from UA when it came along, as being just too inflated for us. My system of choice was the 1e DMG’s best-of-3d6-rolled-6-times, rolled in order. IIRC, I determined that averaged about 14(!) in each ability, based on a Basic dice-rolling program I let...

My one viable 1st-to-5th level 1e Thief was only reasonably viable because 1) 18 Dex, 2) wearing no armor for the additional bonuses to Thief skills, and 3) dual-classed into Thief only after first gaining 4 levels as a fighter, and obtaining 42hp and bracers of AC6-7ish along the way. Those...

For me: This. DIGRESSION: Your question has me realize I'd love to have (and play from) the text/rules of a 2e PHB, but reformatted into the form of the 1e PHB - with the 1e PHB's art, typesetting, etc. It'd be brilliant! I have the official pdf reprints of both. If only I had either the time...

Cook Expert IS available POD, at your link. It’s perfect bound, so it doesn’t lay flat like the original, but it’s otherwise great! Wish they’d do the same with Moldvay’s Basic.

Possibly. All the more reason for GG not to have touched this thing even with a ten foot pole. Which reminds me: I miss 10 foot poles. Though simple geometry told me they were going to get stuck in tight passage corners. Better an 8 foot pole. Or a magical collapsible pole.
