    DriveThruRPG numbers for 2022

That would be a good bet as the order number undoubtedly relates to their internal accounting shared across all sites. You could get a sense of the proportion between the different sites by looking at their respective metal levels.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D's Upcoming Digital Tabletop

It looking to be an incremental improvement over Bioware's Neverwinter Nights. And it will be as popular as that was i.e. it will have a following and a community but will rapidly become it own thing separate from the tabletop hobby.

Rules as Law vs. Rules as Guidelines

There are many types of RPGs. If there is a point based on that fact, one that is relevant to this thread or that I have been talking about in regard to "rules as law, rules as guidelines" then make it. If you want to debate about what is or isn't an RPG and the different types there are out...

Rules as Law vs. Rules as Guidelines

Where I am coming is that in my view what makes a RPG an RPG is the below. I describe to you a setting You (and others participating) describe to me what characters you want to play within that setting. I describe any additional information your character would know about the setting. I start...

Rules as Law vs. Rules as Guidelines

My opinion that the general case is that you can't have rulings without a reference. You can make rulings without a system as long as you have a setting for the campaign. You even make rulings without resorting to the use of dice. The problem is in the logistics and skills required. To pull...

Rules as Law vs. Rules as Guidelines

No you just doing what they did back in the early 70s when folks thought of something fun to play but due to the lack of published systems came up with the rules to make it happen. But they were not operating in a vacuum either. By the early 70s there was a bunch of well-known techniques and...

Rules as Law vs. Rules as Guidelines

Sounds good to me. Not necessary, depending on the nature of what is being described a natural English description may be sufficient to cover any rulings that are needed. My view is that Treasure Tables are a terse description of what monsters are expected to have in the way of the treasure in...

Rules as Law vs. Rules as Guidelines

My viewpoint is that asking Rules as Law versus Rules as Guidelines is the wrong distinction. For me, it is the setting of the campaign that dictates what players can and can't do as their character. If the rules conflict with how things are defined in the setting then it is the rules that must...

    Harnworld Hardback Kickstarter

Harnworld in Hardback Kickstarter I have been a fan of Harn, both the setting and the Harnmaster rules, for a long time. Ever since I encountered the original Harn setting folio at Games Unlimited in Pittsburgh PA. Columbia Games just announced their latest Kickstarter, HarnWorld: Medieval...

D&D 5E (2024) RPG Evolution: The Brand Risks of Infinite Compatibility

Agreed. For one thing, it did an excellent job of handling tactical complexity in a straightforward manner.

D&D 5E (2024) RPG Evolution: The Brand Risks of Infinite Compatibility

The fact that the D&D 4e system design shared little in common with proceeding editions has nothing to do with whether it is a fun system on its own merits. I have a long history of outlining both the strengths and weaknesses of D&D 4th edition in an evenhanded manner. If you have a specific...

D&D 5E (2024) RPG Evolution: The Brand Risks of Infinite Compatibility

A couple of things set our situation apart There is nothing that Wizards can do that a single talented individual can't do in the time they have for a hobby. This is true now for comics books as well with the advent of digital technology and the internet for distribution. But.... Unlike comic...
