When I was 13 in 1990 a friend lent me the rulebooks for Palladium Robotech and Heroes Unlimited. I think I tried to make characters but didn't really get it. The first TTRPG I actually played was Marvel Super Heroes. I don't think I played D&D (2E) until a year later. Over the next five years...
These are some great lists, everyone!
Here are mine:
Fantasy/Fantastic
The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien
A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan and The Farthest Shore by Ursula K. Le Guin
The Kindly Ones and The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil...
I just wanted to say that this really resonated with me. One thing I want to add is I think it's important that D&D is weird. The Middle Earth adventurers go underground and find goblins and ogres, sure, but they also find telepathic space aliens with squid heads that want to eat their brains...
It's pretty amazing picking up the hobby these days. There are so many resources available and it is so easy to learn if you're interested. Just lurking on these boards you get exposed to so much fantastic advice. And then I've got about half a dozen blogs I follow on a weekly basis where you're...

For background:
We play at...
Thanks for putting this together! I really enjoy the show but manage to watch maybe twenty minutes of it a week. So having a spot to come and get caught up on everything is fantastic.
Thanks so much everyone – this is great!
What I'm hearing is:
Keep it simple mechanically – do whatever I can to remove fiddly stuff that chews up time.
Keep it simple subject-matter wise – do something that's fun in short bursts, like a dungeon crawl, where we can stop and go in whatever way...
So four of us are standing around at work today and for whatever reason, the conversation turns to D&D. And it turns out all of us have played at some time in our lives. Two people play occasionally but haven’t been in an ongoing regular game for a while. Two of us used to play way back when...
I feel like westerns are a big source of the concept of the adventure party that we have for D&D. Specifically The Magnificent 7 or maybe even The Wild Bunch. Actually war movies too – Kelly's Heroes or The Great Escape.
