GURPS 2020 PDF Challenge & Book of Dungeon Encounters – An Interview With Philip Reed and Sean Punch

With 28 hours to go this PDF challenge has unlocked everything and done extremely well. 2,525 backers! And Phillip Reeds personal projects are great and as he said systemless. My minor quibble is they sometimes expect you to have non 6 sided die, but its a quibble.

How do you get to GURPS?

Oh, I'm sure it and most of the Third Edition licences have expired, also books that old are likely not to be worth re-licensing. Still like to see it though.

How do you get to GURPS?

I'd love to see Witch World in Fourth Edition.

    qualitative comparison of RPG systems

For GURPS Roll is 3d6 under combat/weapon skill; Target gets Defense roll to avoid. I wouldnt say not recommended for PCs who regularly survive combat. Buy a decent HT score, advantages like Hard to Kill and its pretty survivable even against guns. Maybe: Not Recommended: Games where combat is...

How do you get to GURPS?

Templates help, they are kind of training wheels but D&D needs guides and its own training wheels. If you dont know the options and plan carefully youll often find your character cant turn out the way you wanted them to. Both systems have complex character creation, the difference is GURPS is...

How do you get to GURPS?

Thats fair. Though in this case the rule is Deceptive Attack (p. B369): For every -2 penalty you choose to your attack roll the foe gets -1 to his defense roll. You may nor reduce your final effective skill below 10 for this. Feint (p. 365) is a bit more complicated since its written up as a...

    Undead Origins

The simplest and best origins of Undead I recall was from a game called Ysgarth. Living things had a body, mind, and soul and if you took one or more away you had undead. Zombies no mind Spectral undead no body vampires and mummies no soul. Been a few decades so I might not remember it as well...

How do you get to GURPS?

Thats when you add in Deceptive Attack and Feints or even use the optional rules in GURPS Martial Arts I think titled "Duels Between Masters". I've found the players who like high skill over brute force tend to enjoy those fights. Its generally more fun then just killing by attrition (wearing...

How do you get to GURPS?

These are important guidelines to follow and GURPS makes it pretty easy. Modifiers have a simple range and GURPS Basic p. 345 breaks it down pretty simply in an easy to remember way. Looking that up or just internalizing it gets you pretty far in situations where you just want a fast number and...

How do you get to GURPS?

I like that framing. I'm with you and Michele. Start off simple, use aids like combat cards or holding points back for skills and advantages as they are needed and start off easy if possible. Complexity and choices can be expanded later. I consider complexity to be a trade off for more freedom...

How do you get to GURPS?

Yep, that modularity is the real secret to GURPS. I also let my players choose the complexity they desire. I may offer suggestions to suit their concept and style of play, like "You have a high skill, try Deceptive Attacks or Feint to penalize your targets defenses" but most things are along...

I only run D&D when I need to establish a player base

Finding a local group can be hard so joining a Pathfinder/D&D game is easier. Once you have a relationship then you can try convincing them to try another system. Odds are though they will prefer whats familiar rather than try something new.

Why do you play games other than D&D?

I've seen people convert the Ars Magica system to GURPS but cant say how successful they have been. That style ofplay doesnt really appeal to me.

Why do you play games other than D&D?

Yeah, a generic ruleset that does everything really well is pretty hard. I favor GURPS because it does most genres really well but Champions has it beat for Superheros. While GURPS gives you more granularity and probably more options (I cant think of a single superhero from Marvel or DC that I...
