How Much Do You Care About Novelty?

I'm not much interested in novelty in rules... like kinky new dice tricks. But I like settings that have at least some element of surprise to them... some doorways into the weird for those that go looking.., but I need a baseline of 'normal' to veer off of.

What magic system that uses some form of power points (e.g. casting spell x costs 3 points) is your favorite?

I love DCC's magic system... but I don't think of it as having 'power points', because, if you're (very) lucky, you can cast all day and never lose a spell. Though, there is the possible use of additional Spellburn to boost the spell... and that's more points like. My own preference for magic...

Here Are 2025's Most Anticipated TTRPGs... As Voted By You!

Yeah, I'm curious how the ones I actually voted for did...

It's Time To Vote For 2025's Most Anticipated TTRPGs!

Wares Blade for me... I've been wanting to get a look at that game ever since I saw an ad for it in an copy of Hobby Japan, decades ago. Japanese fantasy with mecha, just the idea of it has wormed around in my homebrew setting over the years.

Which game does monster hunting well?

I disagree that the 'tonal difference' is always or necessarily present. Those shows have elements of both. X-Files most certainly had episodes that were full on horror... with either or both of the main protagonists in danger. They were the hunted. One of it's main influences was Kolchack The...

Which game does monster hunting well?

That's mostly because those shows were NOT RPGs, they were written to maintain and ongoing series with ongoing characters who needed to come out alive so they could appear in the next episode. Early Supernatural felt like anything could happen... that it was going to end badly for the...

    gritty industrial/sci-fi horror RPG recommendation?

I wholeheartedly agree with that. The scariest moments for me, as a Player, have seldom been in dedicated 'horror' games and have never had anything to do with 'stress' or 'sanity' mechanics. I've felt quite on edge in games of Earthdawn, DCC, Twilight 2000, Traveller, Magic World, D&D... and...

Soul Reaver - Legacy of Kain

I can see it useful as a way to hide from enemies, or maybe get past them... gain access to places (go through walls?). Dragging someone else into it would be disorienting, so a way to pick off individuals from a group. or rescue someone. It's a bit like having a teleport power. Depending on...

GMs: Do you have a "Before" race for your setting?

There are ruins scattered around that people have (mostly) moved into. There are theories about who built them... a squat, froglike race that worshiped snakes and disappeared after a devastating war against an unknown enemy. This war saw terrific weapons used that left lasting scars on the land...

Which game does monster hunting well?

I watched a lot of Supernatural but it eventually got a bit too silly for me. I really liked the early seasons where the guys felt like they were in deep over their heads, and wanted by the police as well as the forces of darkness. They were committing crimes left and right to fund their...

Magpie Games Announces Fallen London: The Roleplaying Game

I doubt I'll want it for its mechanics... but if it can stand as a sourcebook on the setting then I'm sure to purchase it.

What is a "Light" RPG? What is a "Crunchy" RPG?

There's also the matter of 'useful crunch' vs. 'extraneous crunch'... and 'optional crunch'. Like, I think GURPS is pretty much rules lite at its core, but has loads and loads of optional crunch... and depending on the person engaging with those options they might seem useful/appropriate or...

    WFRP Vampire Counts Adventures?

Looking at it, there aren't any adventures... but there is a short section (5 pages) that discusses a vampire campaign. There's a short bit about having vampire PCs, but it's mostly about setting up a campaign where the major villain is a vampire.

What is a "Light" RPG? What is a "Crunchy" RPG?

For me... I might delineate them as 'lite' being a game that, once I learn it, I can run/play without having to refer to the rulebook. Whereas a 'crunchy' game would often (but not necessarily always) require referencing something out of the book during a session. So, for me, Call of Cthulhu (6e...

Sell Me on Dungeon Crawl Classics For Long term Play, and NO Funnels

Well, there's no getting past matters of taste. I'm just here to attest that it DOES do long-term campaigns just fine. I enjoy it more for than 'normal' D&D and other class/level systems I've played. It's the only game where I really enjoyed playing a Cleric... because it makes your PC's...
