D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

This is not the point. I've been playing DnD (and other RPG's) for 45 years. It is only maybe 7 years ago that we started rolling in the open. Why? I assume mostly because rolling behind the screen is what we had learned from the original DnD design dating from the 70's-80's. It had always been...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

So GMs in my groups have started rolling in the open barely say 6-7 years ago, so I recall quite well all those behind the screen rolls - and some do still happen occasionally (quite exceptionally in my case). As a player, so many times I was thinking, as the GM rolled dice, I hope this doesn't...

    D&D 5E Optimizing for more grit…

I have a single houserule in my game: no magic exists to bring creatures back from the dead. This means that revivify, raise dead, resurrection don't exist. Then, whatever houserule you use if any, it's a question of balancing your encounters. If you move your dial towards more difficult, well...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

Interesting discussion. Unsurprisingly people that prefer different playstyles provide a different response to the original question. (Mis)trust of players towards the GM has been named abundantly, but I must emphasize that to me this reason is not the primary one for preferring open die rolls...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

Very interesting and thoughtful input. The shift if fudging from dice to HP is a topic in itself! That aside I provided a few posts down from the first my own main reason for preferring open rolls here. In essence: to make player and DM reactions simultaneous so as to share the die roll moment...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

I'm a DM rolls in the open adept. To me it is not that much about fudging rolls - although it is because you inevitably wonder - but more about the disconnect between the DM rolling begind gheir screen and reacting to die rolls players do not - and cannot - see. Especially when extraordinairy...

D&D General Seeking Input: A moment of prayer for the Ranger

Is it possible to reskin the Ranger spells to non-spell class features?

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

We''ll assume for this question that a DM rolling in the open can occasionally roll behind the screen, e.g. for stealth or other rolls that are preferably concealed. But for the vast majority of rolls, they roll in front of the players: init, attack rolls, damage, saving throws, most skill...

D&D (2024) My wishes for 6e: less dark vision and spellcasting classes

What I would love to see in the next version of D&D 6 is a much lower frequency of: 1) dark vision. The poor races that do not currently have it are at a disadvantage compared to the majority that have it. And in a dungeon, it's common for the party to have to light a torch for the human PC...

D&D 5E House rule for fixed HP value at 2/3 HD value

I'm contemplating the following house rule for flat hit points gained per level after the first. I'll ignore the rule that allows to roll HP values for the purposes of this thread, if you like rolling, that's fine - I do to, but I want to try fixed values and see what comes of it. The rule...

Level Up (A5E) Will a Druid ruin my exploration heavy game?

A thick jungle or forest canopy could hinder overland flight reconnaissance. Of course, the other answer might be: start at level 1 :) Flight (or using a familiar that has flight) is pretty common at levels 5+.

Blog (A5E) Level Up’s Monsters: The Stat Block

Your point about reaction rules already handling a lot concerning the timing, is relevant. Thank you for pointing this out. My understanding of reactions, since the rules say it is "a response" to a trigger, is that the triggering event must be resolved entirely before the reaction takes place...

Blog (A5E) Level Up’s Monsters: The Stat Block

Related note on the topic of multiple interrupting powers: what if a creature has a power that reads: Double Trouble: When an adjacent enemy takes damage, this creature can make a melee attack vs. that enemy. How would you resolve Hissing Scuttle and Double Trouble? Who goes first?
