How do you like your steak?

If you’re eating out at a restaurant where this question matters, the answer is “medium rare or however the chef recommends”. You should respect the people preparing your food and the meat itself. Otherwise, just boil it. The people preparing your steak can only control the very outer layer...

    Your most pointless TV/movie/book nitpicks

You certainly find a lot of shows where you can say “those two streets in Indianapolis* don’t connect…because they’re both in Vancouver (and they don’t connect there either)’.” *insert most any city in North America here

What Geek Media Do You Refuse To Partake In?

Yeah. I think if you watched the entirety of the show one step back, it actually agrees with you in its themes. Also, pretty much none of his diagnoses are arrive at by doing actually medicine, that merely confirms the rest of the story. Pretty sure if anyone managed to make a successful...

What Geek Media Do You Refuse To Partake In?

@jian Totally get you’re always gonna hate House, which is fine. But it sure seems like you’re stuck on, this is a totally nonsensical way for a medical professional to behave. It is, there’s a whole normal hospital going on in the background, and then this guy. Yeah, but is it that laughable...

OSR Why does OSR Design Draw You In?

I DM almost 5e exclusively, but would like to get my table into an OSR game because I think it would be more fun at the table. Not necessarily overall, my players love getting deep into character creation, and involved stories. But when I think about the most fun we’ve had in the moment, it’s...

What Geek Media Do You Refuse To Partake In?

Defending House certainly wasn’t on my EnWorld bingo card for today, but here goes anyway. First, yes, it was part of middle aged white guy is a jerk but right trope, but that was never part of the appeal to me, and it’s more than that. This guy is a jerk, but charmingly amusing at it was the...

D&D 5E (2024) Is WOTC done publishing campaigns?

I believe general investor sentiment is that however many “fans” D&D has, Wizards is absolutely pants at extracting meaningful revenue from them. Doesn’t means the fans don’t exist though; there are people on this forum who probably last spent money on an official D&D product in the 80’s but...

D&D 5E (2024) Is WOTC done publishing campaigns?

So, if I understand correctly, unless you are actively shoveling money at WotC, you are not a fan of D&D?

D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

I think if you want to do race as class, in today’s environment, you just dispense with class and do lineage as everything, sub racing instead of subclassing. Every race has three lineage options. One martial, one social/dex, one magic. And everything flow from the subrace you pick. Unique...

    D&D 5E (2024) What Is 2026's Big Adventure

I also think they will use the expansive Thay baddies campaign to start doing mini setting “books” on D&D beyond for more FR territories. Like imagine all the Calimshan stuff in the FR books, but for Amn or whoever.

    D&D 5E (2024) What Is 2026's Big Adventure

We’re getting a big Thay baddies adventure in FR for sure. I would expect expansive territory usage. Dark Sun will happen, they abandon slipcases and go with a single normal style setting book with D&D Beyond free and for purchase additions…free player stuff, paid dm stuff. Repurposing from...

D&D General The "Ease of Long Rests" as a metric for describing campaigns / DM styles?

Pretty much. As mentioned, I stitch together published stuff, so to avoid having rewrite a bunch of encounters, I want them at an appropriate level (not necessarily what the author states though). I would say, on average, that probably leads to overall slightly quicker leveling after 3 or 4...

D&D General The "Ease of Long Rests" as a metric for describing campaigns / DM styles?

I’ve just eliminated the long rest. You get fully restored when you level up, which you can only do in some sort of sanctuary, no tiny huts. It’s worked fine for me, but my worlds and campaigns are largely a series of repurposed “one shots” others have written so I have a good sense of what...

    D&D 5E (2024) Carousing in 5E

Is it too simple to just update the tables so that all “bad” results have a consolation prize? Like, “you’re in jail, but hey, now have a thieves guild contact” or “you lost a finger, but impressed the mayor’s daughter”. Give all bad results a consolation prize. Seems like in the end, would...

Dungeon Crawl Classics What is cool to you from a player perspective?

Wow has this thread devolved. I guess no one that cared about OP is still reading, but I will say anyway, as player I liked the character creation via the funnel, it’s sorta like rolling for stats, but you have these rolls ànd try to protect the best one in the opening adventure.
