    Branching Out from Fantasy

Me too. One of the things I love about 4e's revised cosmology is its similarity to Exalted's.

Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

Come on everybody, do we really need to be arguing like this? I think there's something we can all agree on, and that's the fact that 4E is the best edition of Dungeons and Dragons yet.

Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

There was certainly no "need", but you must admit more than a few people think there was very good reason to. A lot of people have had their interest in D&D reinvigorated by the new edition. It's just a shame that there are also a lot of people who feel left behind by it all.

    What Makes a Deity?

I presume that if the deity was presented in an adventure as a combat encounter that 30th level PCs had a chance of defeating, there would be various quests to hobble or 'depower' the deity leading up to the final battle. If that was the case then the deity could be represented in combat...

    What Makes a Deity?

I certainly do think of them as one pantheon where they all have some fondness for each other, even the evil ones - like some kind of family tie or something. But I see archfey and demon lords and just about everybody else as directly competing with the gods. Most of them at least. As for...

    What Makes a Deity?

I appreciate the level of thought you've put into your understanding of 2e mythology. It's no wonder you're known as the resident expert on Planescape. Personally I like the conception of gods as just big, powerful beings that can be stabbed in the face. I actually enjoy the idea of there being...

    What Makes a Deity?

Right, but what exactly does that mean? How does the rural human peasant know that Pelor is the "god of the sun and summer" when the eladrin who protect his village (and demand tribute in return) only allow teaching on the Summer Queen and her court? How about the violent dwarven raider and...

    D&D 4E 4e Gods with Stats

    Related tangent here.

    What Makes a Deity?

An exchange in another thread (4e Gods with Stats) got me wondering about the difference between D&D gods and other powerful supernatural beings. What really is the difference? This isn't a rhetorical question - obviously there are differences (gods are Immortal as opposed to Elemental or Fey...

    The Laws of the Kingdom?

    Benign rulership is still rulership.

    The Laws of the Kingdom?

Historically, laws have always been about helping the current regime stay in power - maintaining the status quo. Start with the situation you've got (people, places, organisations, power relationships) and extrapolate from there. For ease of gameplay (and relatively quick buy-in for the...

    Why doesn't 3.5 make SENSE?

Yep my bad. You did say "not fantasy" but looking back I see I took you out of context (which was "not fantasy or history/wargaming logic"). Agreed. I agree to an extent, though I don't think you're giving the implied fluff enough credit - Radiant Blah, for example, doesn't have to exist...

    Why doesn't 3.5 make SENSE?

I generally agree with your post but I don't see how you can say 4e is "not fantasy". I don't know if it was always the case, but fantasy is definitely part of pop culture right now, which means fantasy is evolving just like everything else. 4e mightn't be Tolkien (although it will probably...
