That's not the point. Of course every wizard has access to every spell. The argument was meant regarding things you can do. The diviner and illusionist are better at what the wizard is best at anyway: doing his god thing.
The abjurer on the other hand is better at staying in the fight...
Some examples of actual game situations, containing some mild Curse of Strahd spoilers:
Almost half of the encounters in our current and past group are chaotic. It is not related to metagaming at all.
I don't see why targeting the Wizard should be meta gaming. If an opposing wizard disables...
I too think those rules are rather clunky and remind me of Magic the Gathering tourney rules, where you have to ask ok? whenever your opponent gets priority.
1) But I think the DM's failure to ask shouldn't really influence the rating much. That would be like rating illusions low because some...
If your party is in melee with multiple enemies and you want to do the typical god wizard thing, Slow is your best option. Sure, catching them with Hypnotic Pattern is way better but there are situations where you just can't to do that (low ini, being surprised etc).
Thanks for the input. But...
Thank you very much for this informative post!
Some things I would like to add:
The Abjurer is definitely blue and maybe the strongest Arcane Tradition. Arcane Ward is just super good, especially at the levels a wizard is more likely to die.
I do not think Dispel Magic really is better then...
The Wizard is still reliant on other classes to do the actual killing. A Sorcerer 19/Hexblade 1 can outdamage most other classes in melee while casting. They do not have the spell versatility of the Wizard but are very powerful arcane casters with nasty meta magic tricks.
Unlike other very...
Hey Treantmonk,
what do you think about the new spell identification mechanics? I‘ve read somewhere, they are intendet to be optional. They still change the mechanics of casting counterspell if implemented and they seem like RAI to me. I think this makes counterspell slightly worse and the...
Oh, upon re-reading the Prerequisites paragraph, you are right. I always thought you just need the stats for the new class. Having to invest into 13 str is definitely a downside for dipping Paladin. This would worsen the point buy array to 13/14/14/8/9/16.
Just start out as paladin. Second level is usually reached very fast.
Hexblade's Curse is not quite a 1x/d ability, at least it refreshes on a short rest.
There are other ways of doing this Crit build indeed. But for the Sorcadin it comes at a meagre one level dip, which also provides other...
The example I was referring to was the one in Post#121.
In theory, I think to make optimal use of a Hexblade dip is to try to capitalise on Hexblade's Curse's increased crit range as much as possible. So extra dice is the way to go imho. Paladin and Sorcerer both provide those dice (my example...
I do not think the Hexblade/College of Blades combo in particular is the thing too good here. The real problem is the Hexblade dip.
Any Cha gish class profits too much from a few levels of Hexblade. The combo with College of Blades is nice already, but I think there are others that can get even...
I'd probably go with Paladin to avoid having to invest into 13 strength. But you do require some str anyway if you do not wish to be slowed down by armor. Since I really like initiative, I would go for a stat array like 12/14/14/8/10/16 (variant human) or 10/14/16/8/8/16 if you can count on...
May I suggest a paladin again?
An Oath of Vengeance Paladin/Hexblade at level 6 with both Vow of Emnity and Curse will crit with p=0.34 per round, each crit doing ~42 damage when smiting (two handed sword, first level slot, too lazy to calculate exactly with fighting style, no GWM).
A Sorcadin...
Thank you for your efforts on the guide.
I think the Hexblade is a little broken. Not the class itself but dipping one level for Paladins and Sorcadins seems insane. The Sorcadin is capable of really high amounts of burst damage already. For just 1 level of Hexblade you remove MAD and...
Thank you very much for the guide! It has some fresh insights on spell selection and I really like your approach looking at the save types.
I would love to know how you set up your contingencies.
If you look into Bladesinger multi class options, might I suggest pairing with Arcane Trickster...
