Critical Role To Wrap Up Third Campaign, New Exandria Unlimited Miniseries Announced

100%. I also feel that the freshness and novelty of C1 played out in the simplicity of the characters and stories in a really satisfying way - they lean on basic archetypes like "Friend to nature" and "Edgy rogue" and "Evil dragon attack" in ways that are really easy to vibe with, then the...

D&D General Why do good monsters exist, from a game design standpoint?

Blue-and-orange morality is a thing. A given fey might well be Good, along that particular axis, but the risk associated with ticking them off might still be great enough that it presents a challenge to a Good party. Likewise the Ordning brings Good and Evil giants into the same structure, where...

    D&D (2024) Crazy armor idea

I've been reading into the Witcher TRPG lately, and their armour systems kinda work like this. Instead of an attack roll against AC, there's an attack roll against a defensive manoeuvre roll - but then if the attack connects, you compare the damage with the armour's damage reduction. If the...

D&D General D&D Podcasts that are edited like a story instead of a game?

I was really excited for Sitcom D&D, where a bunch of improvisers follow 5e rules in a classic sitcom setting ... until about three minutes into the first episode, where they announced they'd be editing out all the dice rolls and gamey stuff. If you're not wedded to a classic D&D fantasy-ish...

    D&D (2024) New stealth rules.

I know D&D really hates rules about which direction a character is facing, but I feel like some "sneak up on" or "sneak past" rules here would really help ease some DM burden...

    D&D (2024) Influence Action

Oh man, I was looking forward to seeing them go with the playtest rules (AKA the actual 5e14 rules which are inexplicably sequestered in the DMG) with DCs of 10, 15 and 20 for how much they're willing to give up, taking into account the target's general friendliness to the PC. Ah well! Still...

D&D (2024) Which subclasses “should” have been in 2024

I still reckon, if you have 8 schools of magic and only 4 wizard subclasses, don't try to work out the "best" schools of magic, just pivot. Scribes, War Magic, Bladesinger, and ... I'unno, Elementalist or something, but not just "half of the schools".

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

Bryan Lee O'Malley, when the new-ish Scott Pilgrim Netflix series was coming out, discussed how perception of the title character had changed since the books' original publication in 2004-2010 and the movie in 2010. Basically, the character of Scott has always been kind of a bum, not a villain...
