I'm going to be boring and say Ninja should be a background, with proficiency in Acrobatics, Stealth, the clan secret language/hand...

The Shadow Monk covers 90%+ of the pop-culture ninja themes quite well. Stealthy, shadow teleporting, surprise attacks, nerve cluster...

Balance issue as unlike 3E, those characters will have almost twice as many total levels with full abilities as a single classed...

IME, leveling is today's game is much, much faster than it was when we played 1e. I've had PCs reach level 10+ in 5e in under a year...

Elves would have a hard time getting to those limits anyway due to another oft-forgotten (or discarded) rule: they couldn't come back...

3e was a real step forward in this regard because it was the first edition of D&D that offered real, positive reasons to choose to play...

I think that, as is the case with many rules seen in "early" D&D, level limits can make (at least some) sense in the context of the idea...

If you were going to make a cyclops via make-up, what other way would you do it? Having the actors' eyes concealed in the wrinkles seems...

In B/X notably this is true of ranged weapons and spell ranges but NOT spell areas and the like - helps prevent one AOE from killing...
