    Excerpt: Warlock (Dark Pact)

This kind of sentiment is what causes power creep to occur. There are always those who think that every new feature has to be a little bit better than the existing ones or they're lame. So publishers make the new stuff more powerful in order to ensure that players buy it. If you seriously...

D&D 4E Bag of Tricks seems to be a look into 4E summoning

I don't see it as something I would use in combat much. Me: Aha, I use my daily and create a kitty. DM: Squish! The ogre is enraged that your kitty has stained her patent leather boots of stomping. More likely it's going to be my bait on the end of a string to send into dark, trap-laden...

    Class prognostications please

Sorry, my question wasn't too clear. I mean how many 4e classes will there be. That's an excellent and probably highly accurate answer regarding 5e though.

    Class prognostications please

Here's a few fun questions I'm interested to hear people's answers to. 1. When all is said and done, how many 4e classes do you think there will be? 2. If there are too many, will they start to feel repetitive? Like a regurgitation of the same roles with different fluff? 3. What...

Hit Probability is a Slippery Slope

Also, non-martial characters often get more than one attack roll per round due to AoE attacks which makes missing more forgivable.

    Spears not having a range?

Maybe we'll see a Trident in the martial book.

    Spears not having a range?

Didn't the post just before yours state that you can throw a spear? And a few posts before that recognize the difference between a spear designed to be thrown (javelin) and a heavier spear that is balanced and intended to be used in melee combat? So yes, you can throw a spear and you can throw...

    Is Stealth the new Grapple?

Actually, I think the answer is yes. But it's not as bad as all that. I think if nothing else, they will have learned from the grapple fiasco and will more than likely provide better stealth rules soon. Hopefully in the next book or a dragon magazine article. At least, I have my fingers...

    Basic Melee Attacks

The different powers have been mentioned as a reason this isn't necessarily true. But also, bluff and intimidate are useful combat skills if used properly. It really is just that non Str classes approach combat differently but can be just as effective. Your OAs may not be as good but you have...

Hit Probability is a Slippery Slope

Higher level monsters do get better powers, no question. My point was that a higher level PC has many more powers. Potentially a great many more powers. Even though each only grants a temporary bonus, the sheer number of them may, to some degree, compensate for the greater difficulty to hit.

Hit Probability is a Slippery Slope

I haven't played past heroic yet, but hopefully a player's access to a large variety of powers helps to compensate. Almost every slot could have a magic item that gives you a power by the time you get to epic right?

    Firing into Melee

This complaint always confuses me. Isn't the whole point of "fluff" that it isn't really important, it's just there to help those whose imagination needs a little boost? So your dislike of the 'ranger' class is based on the three paragraphs of fluff. Classes in 4e are fundamentally different...

Hit Probability is a Slippery Slope

Fair enough. You make a good point and I may be one of those who hasn't quite gotten "it" yet. That's cool. It's easy enough to misread/misunderstand the intention of your post as a complaint. That's the mistake I made in assuming you were saying that, unless you max your character, your...

Why not make the rapier military?

I think it is superior specifically for when those classes take the rogue multi-class feat. The light blade limitation for backstab is meant to be a limitation and if rapier were martial, the limitation would be meaningless for fighters etc.. Plus, as more books come out we are going to see...

Hit Probability is a Slippery Slope

I'm not sure how this is any different from any min/max debate/discussion. There are plenty of other factors to consider and I suspect in play it will never be this simple. Consider the ability to attack different defenses for example. You may have a good chance to hit AC but no ability to...
