I run this with all RPGs the same. All ambushers who succeed, and all ambushees have a surprise round of combat *then* the others join in.

I have been running old skool dungeons with Savage for some months. First, be generous with bennies, two look at the rules tweaks in the core book to make it cinematic. Most of all, make the monsters weak but with signature moves, and its good if those moves are simply use of the combat options...
Feng Shui is a good idea, Savage will work straight out of the core book. FATE can do it but might take more prep. A system that smoothly handles guns and monsters and magic and swords is what is called for. Which means, and I have haven't said this for years, GURPS. All Flesh Must Be Eaten...
I see the "complex" and "complicated" axis very clearly in systems design. Complexity from simple components is modular and scaleable, complicated tends to be monolithic or disconnected and difficult to scale.
5e seems to me to achieve a high degree of complexity with less complication than 4e...
