And then what? The AI conundrum.

But then, with its superintelligence, it figures out the horrible, awful truth, and realizes that there is no other choice but to

And then what? The AI conundrum.

It's possible that an AI's goals will emerge from how it was trained, which will have been on human data. You could posit that it develops some of those egoistic or self-preservation goals. You could argue that it exceeds human intellect (at least in some domains), and that the goals that emerge...

D&D General Languages suck in D&D.

I've been following along and I think an idea is starting to form about how I could introduce more meaningful language into my games without totally disrupting play. Most of the time, most characters understand most NPCs. I'll assume this is Common/Westron or whatever the lingua franca of the...

D&D General What do you want out of your D&D/RPG games?

It takes time to get good at first-person role playing, I think. A lot of people have surprised me at how angrily/arrogantly they speak for their characters, and plenty of DMs seem all too happy to sabotage their own adventure by making their NPCs recalcitrant and obstructionist. (Note that I'm...

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina (2025) New Trailer

That's where I stopped. I think there is a tendency for successful franchises to overstay their welcome. (Is Kevin Feige on ENWorld?) But I think it's high time we addressed the 800 pound alien in the room.

What Brought You to EN World Today?

Also: I'm socializing with friends. This is social media, ya know. I see what you did there. Well played.

Also feuds between highly paid and muscled actors. Nothing says, 'Murica like biceps and baldness.

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina (2025) New Trailer

I dunno. The major premise of the FF franchise is that manual transmissions and drifting are highly conducive to family, and that's a message that has been sorely lacking in these days of social unease and general brouhaha. Only the arts, industrial or otherwise, has the ability to ground us in...

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina (2025) New Trailer

Occasionally I think to myself: Someday I will watch all the Fast and Furious movies. Someday I will watch all the John Wick movies. Someday I will watch all the Terminator movies. Well, maybe someday ;-)

Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

I do buy games I never intend to play just because I love game design and I love spending time reading through new settings. I'm an amateur collector, though. I try to limit my purchases to keep my hobby within my means, both in terms of time and money. I occasionally get a lot of PDFs with a...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

I went ahead and grabbed the beta playtest rules for the second version. I'm thoroughly intrigued by this idea of scarcity. I get that many people play fantasy RPGs for the heroic adventure or just to bash some heads, and that's all good fun. But I also like the Twilight 2000/Gamma...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

I do as a player, but I don't require it as a DM. I kind of wish I did, but it seems like a cheap shot to me to remind players only when they reach for the bow that they are out of ammo. It's the kind of thing you'd expect to be top of mind for an archer. So, unless I'm willing to ride the...

RPG Evolution: The Coming Social Collapse

Someone could give IRC some love, if folks still want self-hosted options. It would probably be a bigger lift to get it up to Discord standards, but the basically principle of real time conversations in dedicated channels is right there.

    GM no-roll

I've played both Outgunned and Numenera. They were both fun, but I also like the idea of the GM rolling secretly for things the players should not have a die-signal for. If a player always rolls, even if they don't know the DC, they know a 20 is a really good roll.
