IMO... If you really want to make a skills challenge out of every SINGLE trip to somewhere using a boat, you can just follow the guidelines in the DMG, fluffing it as you go - but if your parties good enough they will tell you the skills they want to use. Quick skills and related fluff I can...

A void wraith is pretty mean at 9th level (addition in Open Grave). Insubstantial, Immune disease + poison, resist 5 necrotic... REGEN 5!! Half damage and Regen? Who ever said 4e combats grinded...

I can recommend the Chessex battlemat. If you're in the UK SquashGoblin.com is a good site for them - they're irregular (meaning their cut so you don't get about 2 squares you should do) but that's still 26x26inches and you can use OHP pens to draw out the dungeon.

I ran a mini-skills challenge for a game of poker as Bluff checks, but I was willing to use something else the player could back up logically. Capmbell's write up looks sound, I might even use it in the future.

I'd say it's only for the use of recharging spells - not matrial or devine power sources. But that's me being pickey ;)

I can't tell you why or how... I played the Dragon exactly as described in the MM under tactics... the party I DM for had no trouble at the same level as the Young Black Dragon. They were all melee based. :S

In the back of the DM manual is Kobold's Hall - a side quest set in the landscape of H1-Keep on the Shadowfell. I'd recommend starting with that - its nice for level 1, and I believe you do finally get to hit a dragon at the end of the dungeon crawl. That's a good start, it's probably a good...
