D&D 5E Dumb question re: Ensnaring Strike

We were thinking that if the first hit is a deathblow, does that still count, and it now has to be recast.

D&D 5E Dumb question re: Ensnaring Strike

Dumbest question I'll ever ask, but Ensnaring Strike "ends" if the target creature dies, correct? If the ranger keeps killing things, the original casting of ES does not continue until a creature is hit and lives...he has to re-cast it?

    Fantasy RPGs for Kids

Found this thread because it mentioned Hero Kids. I, too, just took advantage of drive-thru's sale on "kid" related RPGs and picked up the full Hero Kids line. My daughter (8) already read the rules, and she and my son (4) can't wait to play. It looks like a really good introduction to...

D&D 5E How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

Even an inexperienced DM, however, should be reading the adventure book several times to get all the details down. The book explicitly states: "The sequence of events that follow is up to you and the characters. You can present them with as many of the encounters as you want, in any order."...

D&D 5E How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

It's also up to the DM. The adventure states that the DM does not have to give the PCs all of the encounters. Some DM's have done amazing things with this adventure while keeping the dragon in the mix, so I'm glad it's in there. It all comes down to knowing the PC's and reading into their...

D&D 5E How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

Actually they are not setting the town on fire. They are setting hay bales, barrels, and other flammable objects to instill fear. When the PCs get into town they realize this. Even the fire at the Mill ends up being a ruse to pull any heroes out into the open. None of the buildings are actually...

D&D 5E First Session of HotDQ - WOW, what a meatgrinder

Finally got my chance to run my PC's through the "meat grinder." They are a party of 3 so I did scale the encounters a bit (6 Kobolds threatening the family, for example). I have to say they did pretty well given the circumstances. They took some damage saving the family, but by using some bits...

D&D 5E How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

Absolutely, there's no one-size-fits-all adventure. But I think the whole heroic stupid thing depends on how much information is given out by the DM as the characters approach Greenest. Is the dragon attacking in full force when they arrive? Is he just sitting on a parapet somewhere? Does he...

D&D 5E How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

Maybe I am very lucky (okay I am very lucky) to have a great group of players, but after reviewing the background of the Sword Coast, and delivering them a quick synopsis of what's been happening lately (re: The Cult of the Dragon), my players took it upon themselves to write the reasons why...

D&D 5E How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

As a DM, I'd be okay with any of that happening. The encounter with Linan Swift would give the PC's the knowledge to "seek the keep," but I have all of the other options ready to go, whether they obtain the quest info from the keep, or stumble upon it themselves. If they get into town and decide...

    D&D 5E Battlemats?

Coming out of 4th Edition with nothing but battlemats & grids, I'm loving the freedom that 5th Edition is going to offer. That being said I may still scribble some crude notations of cover, etc. just for the players' reference and relative positioning, but no grids.

D&D 5E Where is the point of medicine as a skill?

Perception, however, is not going to give you the same results as using the medicine skill. That's why it is a separate entity. As a DM, if you used perception on a sick King, I'd probably tell you, "Yup. He looks weak and sick." Maybe tell you it looks like he may have been bitten by...
