Worldbuilding, nonhumans, and the inaccurarcy of Earth parallels

Much of your reasoning relies on that the physics and nature of the fantasy world are the same as in the real world. Maybe fossil fuels don't exist? Maybe the steam power engine is unfeasible because evaporating water doesn't expand? Electricity: there is no such thing as atoms and electrons...

    Elrond

Of course, if the heroes of LotR are level 6 or lower, a Balrog of CR>6 is pretty much near demi-God power in that setting. I agree with those saying that Tolkien's world cannot just be converted to the D&D system. Especially magic in Tolkien's world is totally different and a lot less powerful...

Good Feat Choices For A Cleric

Actually, with some smart choices Divine Metamagic may pay off earlier. Play human for extra feat, choose domains that grant metamagic feat or Undeath Domain that grants Extra Turning. A human Cleric 1 with Planning and Undeath domains gains Extend Spell and Extra Turning. For feats choose...

    Ultimate self-sufficiant char.

Also, you may consider to play gestalt (essentially two characters in one).

    Ultimate self-sufficiant char.

Sounds fun! I believe the Chameleon is perfect for you, if you play at levels 6+. This is what I would do: Human Paragon1/Cleric1/Paladin(Of Freedom)2/Human Paragon3/Chameleon10 Human Paragon allows for a lot of customization in skills, Chameleon is a jack-of-all-trades type of character...

    Whiney players....

This is not my impression at all. Whenever confronted with flaws in his examples, Slaygrim modifies his story or justifies his choices by "it's important for the next adventure". When further pressured he admits that he isn't "perfect, nobody is", yet he never admits any guilt in the specific...

    Whiney players....

I don't think anyone has behaved as a jerk, no more than the OP anyway. The first post consists of several examples of badly balanced encounters, which most people pointed out. When confronted with this the OP tries to justify these examples by saying that 'they are important to the story'...

    Whiney players....

Slaygrim, it seems as though you chose really bad examples to describe the Whiner. As has been pointed out by several people, the Whiner is actually justified in expressing concerns in those specific cases (overchallenging encounter and encounters where the player is 'useless'). If you really...

how to do a "defend the castle" adventure?

Some ideas: -Have the players design the castle themselves. -If they know the army is coming, they should use the time well: Harvesting food/water, securing walls, have enough ammunition, make traps, maybe use hit-and-run tactics on the advancing army, look for help (hired?) Also, why is the...

    Homebrewed Spell: True Critical

IME, dipping into a +0 BAB, d4 hp class isn't exactly broken. Without the spells with no arcane spell failure it's almost totally useless. Anyway, if you feel that putting True Critical at a swift action is a bit too powerful, maybe you should add a drawback. Like being dazed after casting it.

    Homebrewed Spell: True Critical

Imo, this is the way the spell should work. The duration 1 round/lvl makes it a lousy 1st level spell. The duration 1 min/lvl opens for pre-fight buff abuse.

    Have you seen these dice?

That die does not look like all outcomes has equal probability (8 less probable than 1). Just thought you should know.

What's the most amazing start to a new campaign you've ever done?

I hate the "you wake up in [insert creepy location]" intro. To me this is heavy railroading, and I would be very suspicious of the DM. When the DM has to create high-level NPCs to force the PCs where he wants them, things already look bad. In a similar way, our DM once started a campaign where...

    Starting up a rare-magic-item campaign

Ok, so I misunderstood (thought a +10 weapon gave +10 to both attack and damage). Anyway, it is still cheaper than an equivalent magic item. And frankly I don't exactly see the point in doing this change (except for flavor reasons). Essentially you have removed one aspect from the game (magic...
