D&D 1E Houserules to make 5e like 1e or 2e (things I've used for the past year) -thoughts?

Good comments. I do acknowledge the word of the designers, one has to; they gave us this AMAZING game to play and talk about! However, I’m still of the opinion that DPR is the larger issue, since with the right set of cantrips, you can always find one that will do what you need, and...

D&D 1E Houserules to make 5e like 1e or 2e (things I've used for the past year) -thoughts?

I agree; I think the cantrip thing (vs. 1st level spells and damage) is a miss, and it’s the difference between high level and low level play. 5e isn’t designed around high level play, or so I’ve found. I agree; casters are still weaker (and used to be weaker) at lower levels, and gain real...

D&D 1E Houserules to make 5e like 1e or 2e (things I've used for the past year) -thoughts?

I agree. 5e is more like 1e or 2e than 3e or 4e by a long shot. That is what inspired me to go back to the “good old days” while retaining the reduced lethality, and fun elements of 5e (like feats, attack options, class features, etc.) High level play is very very common in games I run, in fact...

D&D 1E Houserules to make 5e like 1e or 2e (things I've used for the past year) -thoughts?

First, thanks for all the replies! I am so happy to have good feedback. I also agree the “gonzo” healing of 4e or even Pathfinder to be a bit much. However, as a DM, or my players never seemed to have difficulty tracking hp, or healing over time; so I didn’t even realize it could be an issue...

D&D 1E Houserules to make 5e like 1e or 2e (things I've used for the past year) -thoughts?

This 'Arcane Age' was probably the most controversial houserule I made. There were several reasons for its inception: 1) I dislike the non-scaling aspect of spells (like magic missile) that now, do less than half at 17th level than a cantrip like fire bolt or eldritch blast. This made no sense...

Again, like the older editions, no one recovered from near death in a day's rest, so using the Slow Healing DMG variant, helped to simulate that. Also with a cleric with the healer feat in the party, made regaining hit points has proved to be an easy task. It also put more emphasis of having a...

D&D 1E Houserules to make 5e like 1e or 2e (things I've used for the past year) -thoughts?

The 'problem' (if you want to call it that), with the 5e poison rules was zero real chance of death by poison. In older editions, poison could be quite deadly, now with that said, 5e is more forgiving. So, using the variant for "Degrees of Failure" in the DMG, I used the System Shock chart...

HOUSERULES MAGIC ITEMS • adamantine weapon (any, made of metal), uncommon This weapon is forged with adamantine, one of the hardest substances in existence, and is virtually unbreakable. Any weapon made of adamantine counts as one category higher in rarity than a normal weapon of its type. •...

D&D 3E/3.5 What are your current 3.5 House Rules?

I just made the big switch over to 3.5 and I found a a few "broken" combos because I am still using 3.0 supplemental 'splat book' material (and I am playing in FR with those supplemental materials). I have one other houserule I'd like to use but I wouldn't use it unless the players agreed as...

    Improved haste

You do realize its a weaker version of using shapechange to change into a Chronotyryn to gain its Dual Actions (Su) ability, MM2 p33. The shapechange 'trick' lasts longer, has no XP cost, and does the same thing. I'd say remove the XP cost and make it a longer duration (if your playing with...

    D&D 3E/3.5 3.5/3.0 Elminster (complete with protections)

TACTICS ROUND-BY-ROUND What do you think? I tried to make him 'appropriate' to what I thought he should be as a CR 39 spellcaster. Also, he is the "Big E" after all... Your Immortal DM

    D&D 3E/3.5 3.5/3.0 Elminster (complete with protections)

This is my attempt at a 3.5 version of Elminster complete with protections, items, and spells (I used ALL of the following: 3.5 PHB, and 3.0 FRCS, MoF, UE, LoD, T&B, and MotP). I had to modify his stats and stuff based on 3.5 changes and his "full" list of items.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Advanced Planetar (3.5 with bonus)

As per a request...I felt it somewhat unfair that 3.5 boosted all the main fiendish bad guys (pit fiends, balors, etc.) and none of the celestial good guys (planetars, solars, etc.). side note: My own personal houserule gives planetars vorpal weapons. This is because they used to have them in...

I felt it somewhat unfair that 3.5 boosted all the main fiendish bad guys (pit fiends, balors, etc.) and none of the celestial good guys (planetars, solars, etc.). side note: My own personal houserule makes solars a quasi-deity (you can easily remove that option if you don't like it/agree with...
