A Ramble
I get a great nostalgic feeling every time I look through my 1st edition books too... a couple members of my group are thinking of starting a new 1st edition only group. 3rd edition is fine and I agree with the previous posts that the rules are much simpler and more free flowing...
I can't believe what I am reading!
Charging people to play games??? Gaming is it's own social reward. It's all about getting together with friends and having a few hours of fun. If I ever ran into a GM who charged per session we'd immediately ditch him/her and either get another or one of...
Hmm... I was thinking about that this morning. I was actually trying to come up with a way to recreate Li Mu By from Crouching Tiger. I would say take 5 levels of Fighter so that you can get some feats that will add "Flare" and then switch classes to Monk. Play an Elf (for the +2 Dex) or a...
In my opinion, spell damage is fixed unless using a meta-magic feat that increases spell damage (such as Maximize Spell). Point Blank Shot would give you the +1 to hit but that is it.
There was an adventure featuring Tharizdun in a Dungeon Magazine last year. I can't remember the name of it but on the cover it referenced it by quote "Help! I'm Having Tharizdun's Love Child!". It was great! Complete with new spells for his Clerics and a new type of Undead.
There was a letter in Dragon Magazine a while ago where a guy was dissing the Ranger Class because compared to all of the other classes it has the fewest abilities. They don't compare to any of the other warrior classes because they don't get the Fighter's feats or the Paladin or Barbarian's...
Honestly... if magical weapons didn't get weaker the what has stopped a bunch of Paladins from running down to Asmodeus' place, beating down the doors, and then kicking his butt with their +5 Holy Avengers? It's because those +5 Holy Avengers become +2 Holy Avengers and I believe that to get...

Really that is something you should work out with your group and make it a house rule. However, I use a system that seems to even up the spell casting classes. Arcane Spellcasters need only rest for 8 hours prior to regaining their spells. The magic they cast is channelled directly through...
I typically allow my Good Aligned Necromancer PC's (more focused on the study of preserving life instead of death) to research arcane versions of the various Cure Wounds spells as one level higher than the divine version. But that is a house rule.
Here's a thought on that. In essence non-intelligent undead are actually magic items if you think about it. Bear with me... this string of logic works on all undead. So... if you've ever played "A Paladin in Hell" or looked through Manual of the Planes then you know that the farther a magic...
What is truly nasty is the Clerical Lich. Typically the evil deity which created the Lich keeps the Lich's phylactery as a threat so that should the Lich ever be disloyal he may snuff out his life irrevocably. The problem this creates for the heros is that in order to truly destroy the Lich...
First of all you have to understand that for a Wizard to attempt to make himself into a Lich he normally has to have access to 8th level spells at a minimum (this is going off of 2nd edition for the recipe for Lichdom). When you consider that the Lich will most likely have 15 levels (once again...
So that would be why there is only one Tarrasque and you can never kill it. Knock it out perhaps but it but by virtue of it never taking anything but subdual you would never be able to kill it. I believe that creature was supposed to be one of the "Constants" of any game it was brought in to...
