How we Speed up our Encounters -- what about you?

Yeah, again, it's a fine system that I'm not knocking. It's just not RAW because you can't always delay. According to PHB pg. 288, you "can't delay if you're dazed or if you're unable to take actions."

How we Speed up our Encounters -- what about you?

That's not quite per RAW, because if you allow the PCs to decide who goes in what order each time around, you allow them to bypass turn loss that RAW rules could create. For example, let's say PC A is dropped and becomes dying. When you let the players decide who goes first, PC B says "hey...

How do we actually play the game?

Ban Consecrated Ground. Forced movement doesn't always automatically break a grab. It might give a bonus saving throw, might do nothing, etc. at the DM's discretion depending on the nature of the grab and the forced movement. Simplify daily magic item use, because the rules are annoying.

    [Riddle] Answer: the Mountain

I don't think you want any one miniboss's clue/line to point to 'mountain' otherwise it undermines the objective. What I'd suggest is that the minibosses have "nonsense phrases" that only make sense when they come together. To do this, I might come up with a riddle that has the same number of...

    Opportunity attacks vs. invisible enemies?

Haha, uh, no. I posted the original question about 9 hours before that encounter. I was simply prepping myself for your eventual doom when you face invisible enemies. Muhahaha.

    Opportunity attacks vs. invisible enemies?

After looking again at the rules on pg 290 of PHB, I definitely agree with Draco and disagree with Oompa. What I missed earlier was the phrase "and you can see your enemy" at the end of the "Able to Attack" bullet.

    Opportunity attacks vs. invisible enemies?

I'm curious to know if there's rules that should inform how I adjudicate attacks vs. invisible enemies. I've read the sections of the PHB on invisible and opportunity attacks but I might have missed something, and certainly might have missed an official ruling elsewhere. Examples (assuming the...

    Stacking same condition (save ends)

For even more completeness, here's a link to another similar thread that vhailor started 6 days earlier: http://www.enworld.org/forum/d-d-4th-edition-rules/252321-ongoing-damage-saves.html

    "loseing is not cost effective"

If you feel like you needed all those dailies in the first encounter, then who can argue? How many healing surges did you need to expend afterward? Is anyone really low? Remember you have encounter powers too; I think most players tend to open with encounter powers if they don't yet have a gauge...

    Ongoing damage and saves

Let me add something, because I don't think I made my point crystal clear. Let's say you let Bob ignore the 5 ongoing poison damage from the carrion crawler immediately when he is hit but you give him the slow part of the poison as a "save ends" condition. Now at the end of Bob's turn, Bob...

    Ongoing damage and saves

Let's say a character named Bob is struck by a Pit Fiend's tail sting's secondary attack and then by a Carrion Crawler tentacle in the same fight. Poor Bob! The Pit Fiend says that the "target takes ongoing 15 poison damage and is weakened (save ends both)." Carrion Crawler says that the...

PC hit points vs Monster hit points

This statement seems absurdly out of touch with reality. The spectrum of encounters doesn't touch anything between trivial and overmatched? Then you go on to presume that all parties should figure out what's behind every door, will never get ambushed, etc.? There's thinking outside...

Round Four: Back to the old school modules!

I think I've played or DM'd these: UK3 The Gauntlet UK5 Eye of the Serpent UK6 All That Glitters... WG6 Isle of the Ape I remember All That Glitters being fairly exciting but I'm not remembering much details about it. Eye of the Serpent on the other hand is very memorable. It would be...

    Detecting Magic Items

The Boots were better shape than the rest of the equipment on the ambush team. However, the party was in a rush to get moving to escape from a large goblin army and a demon-summoning gnoll force of significant size (don't want to say how big now that one of my players has peeked into this...

    Detecting Magic Items

Lakoda, I'm sorry if I offended you with my response. Please read my full post if you hadn't already -- I appreciated some of your feedback but I think you just leapt to some conclusions and mischaracterized my original post, that's all. And I think we just have different DM styles, that's all...
