Battle Grid

You need to watch out, legos can sometimes be quite pricey. They are cheaper than dwarven forge products.

He is talking about the 'toddler' duplo lego's. They are pretty reasonable priced. Another use for duplo is take two of the 4x2 pieces and superglue them together to make a 4x4. The resulting piece is about 1.5"x1.5" and makes a good 'stand' to put large minis on to make them into advanced huge versions.

I bought clear plexiglass at Home Depot, and drew 1" squares on it (yes it took a steady hand and a long time) using a Sharpie. This way I can slide different tiles underneath it. Works very well.

if you do decide to laminate the DMG map, I'd recommend going to OfficeMax rather than Kinkos. It's a LOT less expensive! There was a lengthy discussion on how best to laminate the Star Wars Miniatures map over on the WotC boards, and regardless of location around the country, Kinkos was always more expensive.

Also, there are some cool battle grids here:

I particularly like the Lost Temple playmat.

For about ten or fifteen dollars you can pick up a pad of 1" square gridded paper at office supply stores. Mine is a Tops "Easel Pad", and is about 27" x 32". I think it had 50 sheets originally.

The first few sheets I mounted to the back of plexiglass sheets, for instant combat grids. A few others I drew on with permanent marker to make full-size maps of locations the PCs frequently visit, and for elaborate combat settings in my d20 modern game. A cardboard tube keeps them in good condition.

the groups I belong to use:
  • a custom-made table (5 ft by 7ft) with 1 inch grid polyurethaned to the top -->sweeeeeeeeeeet.....
  • a battle mat with a separate peice of plexiglass over the top -->cheeeeeeeeeeeep.....

Thanks everyone,

I looked at the DMG battle grid and it will work. I thought it was a one sided sheet. Boy I am a schmuck! All the ideas have been very helpful and I will probally use several of them. I hope any and all who read this thread have found some useful tips.
