How hard is the cipher? [Answer after trying the puzzle below, please]

  • Wow, this cipher kicked my butt. Well written and challenging!

hi,

honestly, I dont think I'm real good with puzzles at all, less so woth cyphers (and other cryptical forms with nuemrics and alphabets).

so i stared at it.

Then I realized that right after reading HyperSmurfs commentary on the middle word being "THE" ... the whole thing unravelled before me.

The lattice structure provided by boolean gave an excellent visual point for reference and ease to confirm my ... uhmmm visual calculations.

ah well.

I'm very much a visual puzzle person cypher-ingie.
I like pictures and half embeded meaning and where' waldo :D

Another thing to consider is the use of both cryptography and steganography (steganography being the art of hiding a message, rather than encrypting it; more info can be found on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steganography).

I've attached an example message that is hidden with steganography and encoded with a very simple cypher (I call it, Stabby McStab-Pants Fights Off the Beast in the Forest). Apologies for bad MSPaint art in advance.

edit - fixed slight problem in the attachment...

I agree. Hypersmurf's was really awesome. I personally think that he's really a braniac and playing us all the fool.
He has astonishing moderator powers. He got them from being bitten by a radioactive moderator.

Would that not make him a Mutant Ninja Hypersmurf of undisclosed age?

Oh, and the cypher - I tried having just read the rules in post 2 (or thereabouts), and from that I guessed the progression straight away. Mostly because it's what I'd have done as well. The 'the' is a giveaway, although I translated it in order rather than starting there. I did wonder whether you were going to reset the cypher with each word or just keep going - I don't know if that would make it more difficult or not.

REST WEARY GIANTSLAYERS
Right now you're using a pretty basic polyalphabetic cipher. It's not that difficult.

May I suggest getting a little metagamey and making a running key cipher based off the PHB?

This is why I like to take the decipher script skill. I'm not good at puzzles, but my 20-Int wizard with a +16 decipher sript modifier is.

Well, of course. And if this were an in-game problem I would certainly allow the high INT person to do an INT check. To me, that is a totally acceptable solution to a puzzle I put in the game and the players don't request.

But they wanted a difficult one - so right there it is a bit of metagaming by using the player's real intelligence and not the character's assumed INT score. But ... I figure if the players wanted a challenge and they wanted a puzzle, I was totally going to encourage that!
