I customise Legos to create fantasy figures and monsters. Pics of some of my latest ones can be found in this thread.

I collect other fantasy toys too including many mentioned in this thread: McFarlane dragons, MegaBloks dragons, the Yu-gi-o fishman, Schleich dragon and Papo toys. The Papo orc would make a good D&D ogre though oddly, I've never used fantasy toys for D&D.

Farm, dinosaur and insect packs of "toys" from Wal-Mart are excellent sources of large monsters (and the occasional huge) for about $2 a bag. Of course the paint schemes suck marmalade so if you're handy with a paint brush, these are a much better investment. I have a whole passle of monsterous spiders that started out as crappy toy figures. Unfortunately I have no way to post pics so...

But they're really good for $0.12 each (approx) :D

Here's a selection from the mini shelves. Plus an Alien figure that fits better than a 18" collossus.
The Ape is the Man-eater from the McFarlance Conan Series. The Spider is from the Harry Potter toy line. Dragon is from Knights of Tir na Nog

I would, but for some reason IE won't let me post pictures.

I found some little plastic people at Archie McPhee's, which has a website but I think you can only get the plastic figurines at their physical store in Seattle. I bought a bunch of generic people that came in handy as set dressing for our superhero games - there are even cops and little old ladies with canes. :D

Some of those McPhee toys were hysterical! I especially like the "Lil' Edgar" (as in Poe) figure.

I've had great success picking up animals and dinosaurs in gift shops of museums and zoos.

I found a number of animals [horses, donkeys, tigers, bears, wolves & eagles] that are "miniature size" at novelty toy stores such as Finnegan's in Portland, OR and Top Ten Toys in Seattle. They usually sell them in clear plastic containers near the cash registers. I have also been able to find some generic looking miniature "farmers" in some of those containers.

At the novelty toy stores, they generally retail for about $.25 to $1.00 apiece. These animal miniatures work great for druids, rangers or any other characters who have animal companions. The horses and donkeys work great as representations of mounts and pack animals.

I wish I could find an online retailer that sells these figures -- possibly in bulk. If anybody knows, I would greatly appreciate it :)

Archies' even has little orc and knight figurines. Skeletons too, IIRC. As for the bulette/rust monster plastic-y goodness. I remember getting some in a bag of dinosaurs in the mid-80s, so they were still cranking them out. If the original mold sculptor ever knew...

I have that Mystic Knights of Tir na Nog dragon! He's a bit large for game use, but very impressive.

Mage Knight has lots of useful figures, and it's not too difficult to remove them from click bases and glue them onto regular slotta bases.

Recently I've seen some historical figures at Target that have some nice prop pieces with them, cannon and the like. The figures themselves are too big, about 40mm I guess, although they could work for small giants or half-giants. I don't know what toy line they're from, though.

Legos

M&M and Gummi Bears!

Along these lines, Cheez-its fit nicely on the battlemap and players fight ferociously to deal the last blow for the honor of eating their foe.
