What's the ultimate Dwarf ride?

Underdark Truckers

I would say that mounts would be less useful in caverns, but the underdark seems to be filled with wide open spaces.

Forgotten Realms has lots of refernces to people moving caravans through them anyways. The claim there is that the most popular riding beast are these two species of lizards. But one of them seems way too huge and the other doesn't even have the carrying capacity of a llama. Plus there is no reference to darkvision in either entry.

I just don't know that my dwarf is willing to trust that such information is a bunch of typos.

Bear cavalry would be nice, but it brings up pictures of Kohan far too easily for my tastes.

Maybe I can convince my gm to give me some sort of dinosaurish like jungle creature. If I can't get a good rewrite on those riding lizards, that is.

My LG dwarf rides a mule into battle. I even bought it barding.

Nothing quite so inspiring as a dwarven fighter charging into battle on his war mule (well, normal mule but I get some creative license), heavy lance leveled at his foe.

Also if the critter does get whacked its only 8 gp to replace. Compare that to a 450 gp heavy warhorse.

For some fact absed info on Mules in combat (and why it's a bad idea) look into "COL Streight's Raid" into northern Alabama in the American Civil War. THe Jackasses did not do so well....

Then again it IS A FANTASY GAME! So if it works for you and the DM, I say go for it!

As it turns out, the ultimate ride for Dwarves of distinction in the Forgotten Realms are well trained Rothe. Druid trained preferably.

They can carry a lot, live the underground life, fight well without being all about fighting, don't debilitate everyone with fear, move at a fair clip, see forever with darkvision, come with a variety of special abilities, are herd animals so you can tote along a good pack for meat on the hoof, you can use stampede as a goblin destroying tactic, and you look cool sitting atop your little howdah/saddle laying about you with overlarge axes and primed crossbows.

Plus they got hooves so you can enjoy all those neat and cheap magical horshoes.

The lizards that climb everywhere are just too weak to make good dwarf mounts.

You know, why don't they just use chariots instead? That seems far more dwarvish to me! (Although reloading crossbows on a chariot would perhaps be a bit of a pain). In S&F there are some feats and skills for chariot use. (Adapted riding feats and Handle Animal DCs I believe)
