Was there ever a published adventure based on Baba Yaga's Hut?

The Dancing Hut from MonkeyGod Enterprises

John just clued me into this thread. So I'll toss in the advertisement for The Dancing Hut which should be on shelves any day now and is on back-order at Amazon.com: http://members.toast.net/talien/thedancinghut.html

Yes, The Dancing Hut adventure is indeed based on Baba Yaga. She is a major character (but by no means the only one). Other well-known (but not to American readers) protagonists are in the book as well.

The original Dancing Hut adventure is available as part of the Dragon magazine CD-ROM archive.

This D20 adventure, The Dancing Hut, is a sequel to Tsar Rising. You can find out more about Tsar Rising here: http://members.toast.net/talien/tsarrising.html

Both are set in Torassia, a Russian-themed fantasy setting. I included a Slavic section in the upcoming Frost and Fur hardcover which will provide a lot of details that didn't fit into the two adventures: http://members.toast.net/talien/frostandfur.html

As others have already stated, Baba Yaga is indeed a Chthonic goddess, the mother of monsters and guardian of the gateway to the dead. She is primordial in her original appearance and, as Christianity creeps into the picture, becomes more demonic and terrifying. You'll have to play the adventure to see my interpretation, which is definitely different from the other versions.

IIRC The Dancing Hut was also detailed in a 2E book on artifacts and relics.

BTW if using Baba Yaga and her hut in an adventure, you may want to play Mussorgsky's Hut on Fowls Legs from Pictures at an Exhibition. The orchestrated version by Ravel is brilliant.

From the author of Tsar Rising and All the King's Men comes another Russian-inspired tale...

Peasants and nobles alike are frantic: The Tsar has fallen deathly ill with few viable choices for an heir. If the Tsar dies, his scheming twin sons will engage in a battle for the throne, thrusting Torassia into a civil war. But then a rumor surfaces that the Tsar's youngest son, Ivan, still lives. It's up to the PCs to find the young heir before the Tsar's rivals reach him first!

The Dancing Hut is a d20 System adventure suitable for characters of 8th-9th level.

I remember that Baba Yaga, is old, at least a thousand years old. I know that it is a Slavic myth from Western Russia. Since I have read them in the original language (Russian fairy tale books is the best way on learnign a language ;) ).

"Dancing huts" can be found still in the arctic, they are basically built on a tree cut off at about two meters. A small hut, they - I think- were built as a place of shelter. But they are still awfully spooky seeing a wooden hut 500kms from anything, with no large trees around as far as the eye can see. I think I remember someone actually going off and dating some of them, coming back with some being several hundred years old, but I don't remember exactly so don't quote me on that.

I finally found an image of it.

In Sami they are called Nili and they were mean to store food. The leg like structure was to prevent animals from getting at it, and the ladder was often hidden away in the vicinity of the nili.

I can see how if they suddenly came across one in the wilderness or thick forest, there would be suprise. Eastern Finland there is a fashion of carving the wood making ginger bread houses ;)
