Goblin Horde (Swarm) Monster

Created a Goblin Cutter Horde Swarm, with some basic abilities that I think represent their abilities well.

First, an Aura 1, that does damage to enemies that stay in the aura area.

Second, a modified engulf taken from Gelatinous Cube, I think this wonderfully represents a mass of goblins grabbing an enemy and basically dogpiling on him, stabbing all over with their swords and knives. Really basic, I know, but I think it might do the trick. The idea is that it represents a whole bunch of goblin cutter minions, who wouldn't need alot of fancy attacks.

Opinions? Criticisms? Concerns?

Needs more damage.

This is no longer a minion, so it should be doing variable damage (e.g. 1d6+3 or what have you).

Also, you should re-edit the engulf ability- it still says green slime. :)

Otherwise, at a glance it looks ok to me.

I really like your idea, and I think your approach might work, good stuff.

Like others have said the Short Sword attack should probably be dice damage and not the standard minion amount.

The idea of the Engulf is great, but even at level 1 I don’t think it is actually that scary, especially as this is an elite, I would like to see the possibility of more damage.

I also think it should be a huge sized creature.

Anyway I liked this idea so much that I wondered how I might stat a similar monster, this is probably what I would go with:

Goblin Cutter Horde Level 1 Elite Skirmisher
Huge Natural Humanoid (swarm) XP 200

Initiative +5 Senses Perception +1, lowlight vision
Constant Attack aura 1; All enemies starting their turn adjacent to the
Horde take a Short Sword attack
HP 50; Bloodied 25
AC 16; Fortitude 13, Reflex 14, Will 12
Resist Horde takes half damage from melee and ranged attacks
Saving Throws +2
Speed 6

:bmelee: Short Sword (Standard; at-will)
Attack +6 vs. AC; 1d6+3 damage

:melee: Into the Grinder (Standard; at-will)
Attack +4 vs. Reflex; 1d6+3 damage; on hit target is pulled into the Horde
and is dazed and restrained (escape ends both); an escaping target may
appear in any square adjacent to the Horde; Horde can only have 1 target
restrained at a time; while Horde has a target restrained it cannot move
and reduces all push, pull and slide effects by 5 squares;

:melee: Mess Him Up Good (Standard; at-will) restrained target only
Restrained target only; the target takes the following attacks; attack +6
vs. AC; 1d6+3 damage; attack +4 vs. Fortitude; 1d4+3 damage; attack
+4 vs. Reflex; 1d4+3 damage (note these attacks values include combat
advantage)

Horde Tactics (Move; encounter)
Horde shifts 6 squares as a move action, this move may take it through
enemy squares but it must end this move in free space

Alignment Evil Languages common, goblin
Skills Nature +6, Stealth +8, Thievery +8
Str 14 (+2) Dex 16 (+3) Wis 12 (+1)
Con 13 (+1) Int 8 (-1) Cha 8 (-1)
Equipment leather armour, short sword, bad attitude

Wow Mesh, great job on the tweaking. Your's is a far better build than mine, I think.

The reason behind the static damage was so I didn't have to roll. (I'm a bit Lazy), and I'd meant to beef it up anyway, I musta just neglected it.

Unfortunately, I ran this event last saturday, and my fantastic combat got ended rather quickly. 7 people showed up, which was amazing. Previously, I'd been lucky to get 4 players, 3 was pretty much the norm until then.

Overall it went well, if underpowered.

Ah well, every encounter you run is a learning experience. Next time you will have the confidence to be a little bit more brutal ;)
