Welp,

WotC finally put the Table of Contents (ToC) up for January's issues of Dragon and Dungeon Magazines:

Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Table of Contents (Dragon #395 Table of Contents)
Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Table of Contents (Dungeon #186 Table of Contents)

Some highlights for me:

Dragon:
Class Acts: Ardent - More pre-essentials goodness
Class Acts: Knight - Eladrin Knights of the Feywild
Primal Spirits of Athas - Dark Sun!
Godly Images - Chris Sims talks about re-skinning deities because mortal minds are puny! Know the face of your gods!

Dungeon:
Modrons return!
Backdrop article on Mistwatch. Love me some Nentir Vale.
Chaos scar adventure for P1 (levels 10-12)

Some low lights...
Sunken Tower of the Marsh Mystic
Swamp dwelling halflings? To close to Bayou halflings for comfort, <shudder>.

Why hasn't there been any new Chaos Scar material?

There is a Chaos Scar adventure in this month's offerings.

The Runecutter's Ruin

By Logan Bonner
Rune magic is older than mankind; older even than some surviving gods. Deep in the Chaos Scar are spots where runic energy is vibrant and alive and shimmering at the edge of awareness. A creature armed with certain ancient, banned runes could wreak unimaginable havoc at those locations. An adventure for characters of levels 10-12.

The only Dungeon Mag without CS content that I can remember, off the top of my head, was last month.

Soooo.....One non-essentials article.

Where has all the meaningful content gone?!?

  • Um, primal spirits of Athas is pre-essentials.
  • I would say that all the Dungeon content qualifies as pre-essentials (even if they are using monster vault monsters, you get the statblocks in the adventure).
  • Modrons certainly are not essentials.
  • The A Little Help from Your Friends article published today was a series of backgrounds (definitely pre-essentials).
Not sure where you are getting essentials uber alles.

Anyway, back to your regularly dose of calm.

Looks really interesting, especially on the DM side. What are modrons btw?

"THIS. IS. MECHANUS*!"

* Mechanus was a LN plane where the Modrons worked in perfect lawfulness. Here is a Wiki explaining the origin of this D&D monster:

EDIT: Also note, this image actually shows Sigil, the city of Doors, not clockwork plane Mechanus.

Here is a thread about the above image started by Kamikaze Midget who found this in last months Dungeon art download (I found it too, I just didn't post it).

Hope this helps,

tl;dr version:

Modrons are a representation of perfect order, alien logic given the form of geometric shapes (with arms and faces and stuff). Inscrutable and bizarre, they observe and shape the world to be more perfect, more ordered, more pure, under the auspices of their leader Primus.

Occasionally, that requires kicking some ass.
