Directly from the PHB right at ya!...

Yes, and she is not looking down. ;)

Her helmet doesn´t even fit her head because of those ears...

And don´t ask me about Tordek´s hand that´s holding the axe on Sword & Fist cover...

:D

One vote for the current tome covers. They're more mature than previous editions.

One vote against the dungeon-punk look, although I do agree that its only a select few of the illustrations that are guilty of this: Hennet, Nebbin, and all the armor illustrations in the equipment chapter.

The armor illos need to go. These are the core books, not the Dark Sun CS.

And since these are the core books, some of the iconics could stand to look more archtypal- esp. Alhandra, who needs to look more like "St. Joan" and less "mercenary soldier". The only indication that she could possibly be a paladin is her little tat. C'mon, we can do better.

Obviously tastes vary around here- we have the stodgy medieval traditionalists on the left, and the cyberpunk skateboarders on the right. I do realize that dressing everyone in hosen and donning armor ripped straight out of the smithsonian is dull and unrealistic as well, but I would like to see the art design reeled back toward the middle. The FRCS was a good example.

Jumping onto Monte Cook´s the-world-is-full-of-rants-so-let-us-rave-about-the-GOOD-things-wagon, I was more than pleased to see the new look of the dwarves.

Thank you for the new dwarves, now they seem believable, proportionate AND COOL! :):):):):)

And I don´t mind their flat heads.:D

[Illuminae's wonderful image snipped.]

Granted, she's an elf and he's a human anatomy drawing -- but that was still very, very funny. :D

Look at my NEW (elf x elf) comparison, above... ;) :D

My argument only has no validity if you take it as a given that the new style of art looks like Mad Max leftovers. Since nobody but you seems to support that view, I hardly think you can take that as a given.

How do you know that I'm the only person to hold that view? There may be someone else who agrees with me and just hasn't said so. Or someone else who agrees and hasn't seen this post. Besides, even I were in a minority of one (which is highly unlikely), it wouldn't make me any less right. Many ideas have started out being believed by one person (the person who thought it up) only to be more broadly accepted later on.

Here's a pic of a character (actually a life-like action figure - I couldn't find a photo of the character himself) from the Mad Max films. Are you seriously suggesting that this character would look out of place next to the ones in the current 3E books?

*logical Falacy alert!*

Just because a Mad Max figure could fit in 3e doesn't mean that 3e looks like Mad Max. A Jedi wearing robes would probably not look out of place in a 3e book, but that doesn't mean 3e looks like Star Wars ;)

Oh, and to stay on topic, I really like the tome look of the covers. My biggest reason for this is that it keeps them non-campaign-specific (fantasy scenes as covers generally promote a certain campain setting ex: Wheel of Time).
