Rite Publishing presents
Haiku of Horror: Autumn Moon Bath House

haiku-1-coverart.jpg

Scented waters stir,
unbound strands aching in search
for a lover’s touch.

The Haiku of Horror series depicts iconic mapped locations for use in Kaidan or other Asian based settings with labeled maps with complete descriptions and full-scale maps ready to print and use, plus image files for use with virtual tabletops. The location includes a complete, detailed, complex encounter featuring new monsters, haunts, and all necessary mechanics to run it. The mapped site is designed for ‘plug-in-play’ use ready to insert into any existing module or Asian campaign.

Autumn Moon Bath House serves as the oriental version of the typical fantasy tavern where adventures begin and end. However, rumors persist of a spectral woman with long black hair, who is seeking vengeance against the living and redemption for her soul.

I named this series, Haiku of Horror, for 3 reasons:

1. It's a recognizable Japanese word and concept to westerners.
2. I've included an appropriate haiku that helps elucidate the mystery at the mapped location.
3. Because a haiku is a very concise poetry format, this product is intended to be a very concise, as a mapped site with a single encounter, accompanied by all the mechanics to run it.

It's just a slice of Kaidan, so using haiku in the title seemed fitting, I thought.

Incidentally, this is my first release as primary author/designer, though I've been primary developer of Kaidan throughout it's entire history.

As a bump, regarding the yurei no kami ghost (template) featured in this release, as well as an associated Ju-on (grudge) curse - I tried, in some ways to emulate the ghost featured in the movie, The Grudge. This ghost has special corporeal attacks with her hair (abilities similar to White Haired Witch), while the rest of her is incorporeal. If a PC falls victim to the Ju-on curse, that person becomes 'haunted' by the ghost, appearing and attacking them where ever they go (every 1d4 days) until the ghost is laid to rest. This product includes an investigation among several NPC bath house staff members to arrive at means of laying to rest - enough for a side quest adventure.

Well this product has done really well in sales at both the Paizo Store and DrivethruRPG.com - it's in both the Top 100 Hottest Products and the Top 100 Small Press Products, still no review though.

While I plan to do a Japanese castle in 2 releases, as the 4th and 5th release, I'm curious to find out what you think I need to do as the next few and the ones after the castle.

After posting a similar question on my Facebook Page, 2 responders seem very interested in a kabuki theater, so that's my next planned map site.

I envision doing a: geisha house, temple complex, rural shrine and cemetery, ryokan country inn, 3 typical shops in town, 3 typical shops of the red light district, a brothel, a farmhouse and grounds, a samurai manor, and many more.

What do think should be the next releases?

Being my first authored work, I've been dying to get some feedback to this product, and whether I should pursue this line with further releases.

Lo and behold, the first review is out by Roleplayers Chronicle and it got a 10/10 rating - woot! I'm dancin'!

The second review by Endzeitgeist gave a 4.5/5 star rating.

Edit: in a couple days, Cape Rust from Roleplayer's Chronicle is having an Email interview with me about Kaidan and the Haiku of Horror series! I'll post a link when it's available.

L.U.G. Con is an online convention held quarterly at Google+, and this past weekend was the last convention run. Mark Knights of the Pathfinder Chronicles blog ran 2 sessions of the Haiku of Horror: Autumn Moon Bathhouse.

Here's a link of the live recorded second session of Autumn Moon Bath House - enjoy it and learn how it runs.

Comments by players: awesome professional maps, fantastic mature storyline, excellently written; no complaints at all.
